PostPosted: 20:27 - 25 May 2007    Post subject: Near miss. Car driver apologised....... Reply with quote

Picked up the blade this morning Mr. Green so been pootling around most of the day on it. Had to stay in the city for the afternoon, had the nail removed from rear tyre and repaired. Bought new chain and sprockets etc etc.

Managed to find a couple of hours to take it out into Northumberland for a blast once the tyre was good.

Had the tyres nicely warmed up, swiftly slipping it through a B road heading out to Matfen. Normal B road conditions - tractors, shit, gravel, wannabe rally Saxo drivers oncoming in middle of road etc...

Came over a brow of a hill pushing 60 having slowed down for it, then accelerated to 80 as the road was clear - when - I immediately noticed a car poking it's nose from a small side road on the left, overgrown with hedges about 100yds ahead (no road sign indicating a road to the left, probs priavte road to gaf)

Driver was looking to the left, didnt even look my way - then pulled straight out to the left. Road was narrow without lines seperating lanes - and car was a A6 Estate, so as the car was swung out it took up most of the road.

I had the brakes on almost straight away. Rear of the estate was looming fast - I had to swerve round the front of the car - luckily there was nothing coming the other way otherwise my option may have been to try and corner into the left side road which may have resulted in hedge rash on me and the bike.

I didnt get a chance to give him the horn until I was along side him as I'd down geared to second.

I pulled up in front and got off the bike.

Calmly walked up to the window which had been opened. Driver was turning down his CD player which had been blasting loud.

Driver apologised and I just told him that at this time of year you have to look and listen both ways for bikes - I explained to him that He didn't even look, to which he agreed, and I further explained what could have happened had there been another vehicle oncoming and had I not reacted on the brakes as quick as I did. Driver apologised again and looked very ashamed.

Off I went to continue hooning the ass off the blade. Which is very nice if I may say so - pure corner eater Twisted Evil

Ah but if you'd crashed into it I hope you would've taken it on the chin and definately not posted about it on here other than to inform us that you'd had a crash.

That's got to be a first!
Normally whenever i've had a word with car drivers their first reply is 'But you were going too fast' - to which the standard reply is 'If you saw me, and judged that i was going fast, why the fuck did you decide to pull out in front of me?'

near miss = miss. so not a problem.
near hit = hit. oh dear.
why not just say "i was speeding and didnt adjust my speed in time to avoid clenching bum!"
also on bikes think that they are all out to get you and you will be ready for most things.

Exactly.

Was it not the "Lord Carlos of Fandango" that posted a hugely argumentative thread recently about treating, and accepting, ALL other road users as idiots. Rolling Eyes

he said if you actually read the post properly he had the brakes on almost straight away Rolling Eyes
imo it was very nice of the guy to apologize the way he did.
yes he did start a rather disputable thread about other road users, but in this thread i dont see him flaming/abusing the driver of the car, just simply stating his near miss thats all.

glad your ok though Thumbs Up Karma

You can roll your eyes all you like, but had you taken your own advice from the "Other" thread, you may have avoided the need to jump on the brakes at all.

Glad you didn't make contact!

Everyone makes mistakes, the trick is to learn from them. It's a difficult trick to learn Wink

Someone tell me when they have the secret to doing it...I'd love to be a perfectly safe, optimumly fast rider, but hey, there seems to be a lot of them around on here, so maybe one day I'll make it. Laughing

1. Roads are designed as a system on which the members of our society have access to journeying and as a system for the transportation of goods and consumables for industry and commerce. Roads have laws pertaining to their safe and correct use.

2. Road users fall into classifications, such as; motorists, passengers, pedestrians, cyclists, horse riders etc and as such various vehicles which again have their own classiications are used by the motorists.

3. The general public Joe as a motorist can be of a vast cross section of society. Nothing of their ability or experience should be assumed.

4. Motorcyclists are a minority. Riding a motorcyle comes with a degree of risk. Riding a motorcycle is hazardous. It is the responsibilty of the motorcyclist to assess this risk and apply certain road craft to enable a safe and comfortable journey.

5. Road traffic collisions are a fact of motoring. Road users make mistakes. Vehicle malfunctions also cause accidents. Any such cause of a collision can be very dangerous for motorcyclists for obvious reasons such as leaving your vehicle at 60ph and flying through the air until you hit a stationary piece of armco.

6. Whilst it may be the fault of another motorist which has caused a collision with a bike and a biker, it is still the responsibility of the motorcyclist, to accept, that they have by the very nature of motoring in this country put themselves in the line of fire. Soldiers who go to war don't complain about getting shot at.

7. It would be great if the roads were open to the horizon for all motorcyclists to get from a-b without mishap. This is not reality. If this is what you want book a track circuit for a whole lifetime and ride on it on your own and live in a bivvy bag in the field.

8. It would be great if all the rest of civilisation were educated and spent all of their time when using the road watching for motorcylists. This is not reality. If you want to be seen in such a manner, buy a helicopter and hire a pilot, get them to put a spot light on you and fly 6 feet above your head shouting through the loud speaker "look, a fucking biker!!!"

9. You can do lots of things to make yourself a better motorist as a motorcyclist. You can join RoSPA ROADAR or IAM and get relevant training or see an advanced instructor at a local school of motoring. You can do trackdays, wheelie school etc etc. You can even spend a day taking a double decker on a skid pan or drive a tank through a field full of mud. All experience is valid.

10. NONE of the experience listed in point #9 is valid when another motorist crashes into the back of you breaking a few panels and a number plate, or when a truck pulls out and you end up a blobby red and pink pattern on its chassis.

11. Motorcylists are NOT a family. We are not a sub culture of renegade protesters. Some bikers ride for touring, or commuting, or racing on the track and never see a road - the list goes on. Young, old, fat, thin, black - white - yellow - red...... the lot. Bikers are people and all people are different.

12. Motorists who are not bikers are NOT all idiots. They are not a sub culture of bike hitting twats who do so on purpose. Don't expect the motorist to be aware of your highly strung regard for your own safety.

13. Ride a bike or don't ride a bike. Take whatever comes your way on the chin and stop whinging like Bambi blaming the world for your choice to be a risk to yourself.

Rolling Eyes

meh.

Note the lack of 'idiot car driver made me crash' from my post.

Just two motorists calmly agreeing upon something.

Perhaps you would have felt better and more at home had the thread been posted by a teen scoot boy with hedge rash, then you could have told him car drivers are morons and everyone is a murderer - then gave him tips from your nineteyumpteen years experience of being a twunt.

Stinkwheel, that proves nothing. His post doesn't have a "omg fucking cager bastard nearly hit me.....then he had the cheek to apologise, what a twat" like some others on here.

We all do stupid things we have told others not to do, get over it and stop acting like 12yr old school girls, bitching.

They should be looking and listening both ways for bikes ALL year round, not just sunny days.

Miss, Miss! Hollis was pulling my hair! Then he tried to look up my skirt!

I was just surprised the author thought the incident worthy of mention at all.

Speak for yourself, If i see a car pulling out from a blind side entrance i alter my speed accordingly . . . you tend to live longer.

Said it before OBSERVATIONS, this time they were used but not acted on partly due to excess speed. Had enough time to see the direction the driver was looking and notice the stereo was up loud, but still pinned it until it was too late. The whole situation was avoidable IMO.

Must have been the day for it. Had 2 4wds pull out on me on a round about today. Kind of suspected it going in so was well prepped for it. Still closer than I would have like.
Got the adrenalin going. Still dont know if either of them has seen me yet.
Alls I can tell you is the closest one to me was driven by a women with a kid in the back in a baby chair.

Granted the other one saw her move out and with her cover headed out too.

Its amazing since it was a big round about and I was well and truely on it before they made their move.

Silly fuckers either just didnt look or figured I can make it.

If not for me watchin them they wouldnt have made it.

Once past I considered turning around and giving chase.

Well done for maintaining your cool.
