Hi,

My girlfriends car* has been stolen.
She's going to be buying another one, but was wondering when the best time to notify the insurance is?

I know if your car is stolen and in an accident, your insurance still pays out, but if the stolen car is in an accident, can she be liable if she's cancelled the insurance, or transferred it to another vehicle?

Oh, if anyone see's a red fiesta registration J996MDD please kill the chav bastard driving it. Thanks Smile

*I know it's a car, but the question applies to bikes too so I thought I'd put it in here

Have she not informed her insurance company that it has been stolen yet?

The first thing I did when I discovered my bike was stolen was to inform my insurance after talking to the police. As it was recovered I was able to cancel the claim and not lose my NCB. However, they normally place a time-limit between actually paying out and when you make the claim. This period of waiting is to eliminate the likelihood of your vehicle being recovered.

I would let them know asap. Smile

Oh, I should have said, she won't be claiming on the insurance cos the excess and loss of no-claims is worth more than the car

You still need to notify them. Just change the vehicle details to the new replacement vehicle, no need to cancell it.

Ahh, ok - now it makes sense! Laughing

When I had my first CBR stolen I didn't tell the insurance company at all. I just switched my policy to the new bike.

You're in a tough situation.

If you've told the police you should be ok. But if you tell the insurance company it's been stolen they'll count it as a claim even if you don't actually claim.

Same happened to me with AXA, when my MZ was stolen, I told them, but didn't claim, when it came to renewal they said I had a claim. Which in my eyes I didn't.

So I swapped to Carole Nash and didn't tell them about it.

If it's in an accident, you should be able to fall back on the police with a date and time of reporting it.

Why cancel and lose the no claims accrued to that point of the year. Just get a car that the company will accept and transfer the policy across.

My car was involved in an accident not my fault it was parked up,anyways I asked when I could cancel and was told until the insurance is paid out and they see who is to blame then I would have to keep the insurance in force so I added my new car to the policy and still paid extra while the insurance people sorted it out.
