 |
|
I'm not exactly a new rider, I was offroading a few years ago but this section seems most fitting.
I've got my CBT next month so this morning I decided to dig out my muddy old boots and my lid and give them a clean up ready to be worn again. Anyway, my question is, how do I detach the visor? I've never needed to do it before but now I'm cleaning it it'll make things easier. It's a pretty standard attachment, much like this (but with better decals):

I've noticed if I push the visor up as far as poss, the pod thingies come away from the shell a bit. I've tried sticking knives and whatnot in there to try to prize them off, but it's not having it... and also I don't want to break anything.
Also a quick question about insurance. I know that I should get comprehensive if I can afford it, but for a 16 year old student it's easier said than done. The only things I'd be realistically at risk of where I live, is either dropping the bike/being knocked off, or getting it nicked (way more likely). Would I be good to go with Third Party F&T? After looking at some quotes I'll save a few hundred pounds (the difference between under earnings and over earnings) with it so will I be covered for every likely incident?
Appreciating your honesty. ____________________ My deviantArt gallery - My Youtube profile

I would go TPFT. That's what I am (skint 18 y/o student) You're basically covered for anything apart from your bike if you crash into someone. ____________________ My Flickr |

I'm not even going to go there with regard to the visor, then it's not my fault when something goes 'ping'.
Regards insurance. The only way you'll be covered for any accident is with comp insurance.
TPF&T covers exactly that. It covers any damage you might do to other peoples vehicles but not your own.
So, TPF&T you are taking a chance. If the accident was your own fault or the other driver was either not insured or didn't stop, you're screwed. If it was their fault and they're insured, you can claim off their insurance.
Worth bearing in mind though that if you claim on your insurance, you will have to pay the excess first (usually £250) and will lose any no-claims you might have been entitled to for the following year (say 10% off for the first year). You also have to declare the claim for the next five years, they WILL load your premium for this because they are not prepared to take a loss.
So, you have to consider the value of the bike you are insuring. Is it worth £250 plus 10% of the insurance premium (which you wouldn't be saving next year), plus say a 5% loading for the next five years plus the inevitable 'depreciation' they apply to the insured value of the bike when settling your claim.
So say you spent £2000 on a bike and it cost you £500 to insure comp. If you throw that bike down the road and it's written off they will probably pay out an optimistic £1900 for it (depreciation), minus your £250 excess. So you eventually get a cheque for £1650. No NCB next year so that's another £50 you've lost. Plus another £25 loading for the next five years.
Boils down to they paid out £1475 for your £2000 bike. Oh, and they cancelled the remainder of your policy for that year so you have to buy another policy straight away for your new bike.
Ok, so a £2000 bike is just about worth insuring comp. Now run that for a £1000 bike. Depreciate to £900, minus £250 so they pay £650. Add in the 'bump up' in insurance premiums, you actually got £475 for your £1000 bike.
"Hang on a minute!" I hear you cry. If that happened shortly after I took out my policy and they cancell it, it's actually going to COST me money to claim. You'd be right.
Sorry, that got a bit waffly but I hope you see what I mean. It might be worth comp insurance on an expensive bike, definately not on a cheap one. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. Looks like TPFT is the most appropriate choice then. Thanks guys!
I know when my brother got his bike, he paid £695 for it, then when it got nicked, he only got £305 back. ____________________ My deviantArt gallery - My Youtube profile

Ask for all flavours of insurance though when you buy insurance, cus sometimes TPFT ends up
cheaper than TPO , infact some strange things have happened to me when I used to drive a box
comp on a special offer was £10 less than TPO , though why not and bought comp.
But as Siggi once said insurance companies are lower than MPs they'll do ANYTHING to worm
out of paying and cite any sort of technicality to get out of paying, thus I try pay them as little
as possible at all times. ____________________ Spain 2008France 2007Big one 2009 We all die. The goal isn't to live forever, the goal is to create something that will. In the end, your life will flash before your eyes. Make sure it is worth watching. |
