My mate just sold his gix 750 srad and wants to go up a bracket to 1000cc. Hes only got about £2500 though so the sports bikes available are a bit thin on the ground. Hes found a couple of early R1s and now we have found a TL1000R in corona colours with 16k on the clock for 2350. Anyone got any knowledge of these bikes?

I (foolishly) considered one for my first bike!! It was a short period of insanity, but I was drawn to them as they sound amazing, look great (IMO), and have lots of V Twin produced power Very Happy

I have heard many horror stories about them - in particular dodgy rear suspension (I think its some kind of rotating plate damper thing - like original Mini suspension) with a predisposition to produce spectacular highsides was often quoted. How true this is in real world situations I don't know.

Secondly, I was told that the front forks often take a beating due to a lot of wheelie action, and fairly heavy weight, so look out for this. I may consider one next time though - probably depending on the responses to this thread!! Thumbs Up

Fixed for the TL1000R.

It was the TL1000S with the rotary damper.

they seem fairly rare and getting much info on them is proving difficult.

They're good bikes, seems quite cheap.

They got a bit of a reputation with that rotary damper as a widow maker. But they're quite well respected.

What you see is what you get really, watch out for head bearings, a fenda extenda is a good thing as water comes off the front tyre straight onto the front cylinder and you quickly find yourself riding a 500cc single.

Buy it, love the noise, and keep it rubber side down. The last one is the hardest bit.

That is a stunning bike.

But watch out because big suzuki twins have been known to have a few handling problems at speed.

I never remember whether it's the TL or the other one. But either way, if he's getting one he must get the suspension sorted (or ensure the previous owner has).

I'm sure someone on here will be more helpful in how/why it should be fixed!

Can't speak for the TL1000R but I had the 'S' version. Will be getting another soon,as I loved it so much. My TLS was a bit of a dog to handle, really had to throw it into the corners but it was part of the charm. Acceleration was pretty imense to say the least. Cruises at about 100mph at 6k. They sound f***ing awesome as well. Mr. Green

I think the TLR is a nat faster and better handling than the S model but isn't quite as dangerous (say that like it's a bad thing!) Always best to get a Power Commander of some variety to smooth out the snatchy fuel injection.

Mike.

These R1s you've seen at that price. Would they, perchance, be '98 R1s?
If so, smack your mate for even considering anything else.

A mate of mine had a TLR with a Micron (i think) full system - it was by far the best sounding bike i've ever heard, and the sound at tickover alone could loosen bowels at 30 paces.
Unfortunately, it was a real hedge seeking missile and finished its life under the wheels of an oncoming van.
Thumbs Up

well he bought it. very nice it is too. all handling seems to be fine and the noise from the microns is ummm, nice! Alot of bike for the money. certainly a head turner with that noise and them colours!

Yeah it was 98/99 R1's but the ones for that money, sub 2500, were high mileage dogs or dodgy in some respect.
