Hi anyone done japan via bike? wanna start planning a 2 week trip over there for next summer. So was just wondering any advice on renting bikes, best routes, destinations, estimated costs, etc. Dont want the trip to be entirely on a bike though, ideally I would like to spend some time in the big cities then maybe see some of the countryside on a bike? Split it half and half i think. Cheers Thumbs Up

I'd absolutely love to go, but it's a fairly exspensive destination and I guess not many people manage to get over that way. Shame Siggi is banned as he lived there for a while I believe.

One of my ex's went for a couple of weeks and loved it to bits although she also said it was the weirdest place she'd ever been and also fairly uncomfortable as being big boobed, men would just stare at her chest without a care in the world.

Konnichi wa! Smile

I bicycled from Osaka to Kyoto, then went via train from Kyoto to Tokyo (cos it was too damn hot ride with all the panniers in August!!) Best time of my life, spent half a week in Osaka, 4 & half weeks in Kyoto, 1 week in Tokyo. Would love to motorbike through Japan, but can't afford it just yet, going back in a year or two (unless I win the lottery, then i'll be booking my flight tomorrow!) Can't wait to go back Sad

My friend may be going there with his Japanese girlfriend in July or October, gonna hire a bike and travel too. Let us know how you get on?

Check these useful links, should be plenty to get you started! (sorry if it's too much info) Wink

By the way Stiffler, Japan is not as expensive a most think (except sometimes for booze)
I reckon food & accomodation is about the same as UK. If you take a tent, you can pitch pretty much anywhere (within reason) and you can use the onsens (bathing pools) to freshen up. Thumbs Up

Doing this can save you a bundle, but if you need a place to stay, get yourself a YHA card which you can use to get discount accomodation around the world, including Japan!

Firstly, sorry for late response. I noticed this topic just now.

In fact, there's not so many rental bike shops in japan here.
Rental fee is about 18,000yen/day(big bike).
[Rental Bike Shops] (I've used MSL in tokyo and Wing in Nagoya)
(But please telephone the shop and check if you can use the system before going)

-Tokyo MSL

-Nagoya Wing

(I haven't used below one)
-Kyoto Sashu

translation

My favorite areas for riding.

Japan National Tourist Organisation travel guides. I printed these and laminated them and put them into an A4 folder, was easy to read in the rain and easy for people to mark directions for you & or rub out if they get it wrong!

Here's some essential links.. (Save them to your Favourites, then save the links and PDF's onto a 1 or 2gb USB stick, so you can just plug and play in any internet cafe! That way you don't have to carry around a heavy A4 folder Wink )
