hey all, im just back from finishing my cbt, was my first time ever on a bike and i loved it and asside from forgetting to cancel indicators a couple of times it was fine. Im looking at getting my first bike to run me the couple of miles to and from my house to uni everyday and moneys a big deal. Any tips?

At the moment im looking at a little honda cg125 chinese copy for £400, having asked about the chinese bikes im getting some positive feedback provided basic tightening of bolts etc.

Finally what is entitled in the jump between the cbt and the test? thanks , Fras

Hey there mate congrads on passing your cbt, my g/f has a chinesse bike and although they are cheaper this does mean the quality is slightly lacking, not to say the bike is rubbish but you may run into problems, i would suggest getting something more know and reliable for your first bike, what sort of bike apart from this you looking for are you focused on geared bikes or do you want a twist and go, going from the cbt to your bike test now involves doing your motorcycle theroy and then according to age (if 21+ then direct access test, if under that you will have to do your restricted liecence which means you get a bike and restrict it to 33hp if it is over this).

yea its def. a geared bike im looking at, the other option was an old suzuki cm125, 25yrs old but with low mileage. but im thinking a bike of this age will need more maintenace than a new chinese job.

about the test i was asking more about the techiques taught a tested / severity of marking than the age restrictions. Is it the same as the driving system with minors and majors? thanks

yeah it is the same as the car test with minors and majors but in my opionion is a better test as it makes you do more than you would on a car test

the only thing i can see wrong with it is the massive 9BHP... other than that it looks quite tidy.
very good price though! some 2nd hand CG's about 10 years old go for more than that!
dont know why everyone knocks chinese quality... the actual engine is good! its just the person-assembled parts that suck.

yeah well i never said they were bad just they are done cheaply so have cheaper parts fitted to them, my g/f's is reliable apart from a cdi unit problem which was solved quickly anyway. Her bike is really quite quick and considering its a twist and go it gives my fzr400 a beating up to 15mph lol Embarassed , Just make sure all the documents come with yours as we got hers from germany and it was difficult to register it but got there in the end. Hope you enjoy it mate and if your in need of parts im sure one of us will be able to source a dealer for you if the person you are buying it off isnt a dealer. Good luck and put some pics on here. Thumbs Up

Well done on your CBT.If you decide to buy the Chinese copy check that the spares are readily available.A lot of the places selling these bikes claim they have spare parts available or to order till you need something then you find out they have little or no spares back up and you might have to wait months for the part.

Phone the place thats selling the bike and pretend to be an owner looking for a replacement part and see what response you get. If they say it's in stock or can order it in reasonable time great buy the bike if not walk away.A friend of mine got a 2nd hand chinese copy dirt bike for his son but had loads of problems when the bike needed parts.

Once you've got a bike get in plenty of riding time and consider taking a couple of lessons before taking the test. Concentrate on riding smoothly, road positioning and observation.Find somewhere you can practice hill starts, emergency stops and U turns. Then take a lesson and ask the instructor to run through a mock test with you and help with anything you might be unsure of or point out any areas you need more practice in.

Sorry this is a bit long Exclamation Good luck with your new bike and test Thumbs Up

The story of 3 chinese bikes...........

My chinese bike - I bought it last November and cared for her deeply, then in March I sold her to a friend who treated her with a little less respect and it showed, within a month everything rusted and the fuel tank started leaking (The weld split) - After several phone calls the supplier said 1 month for a replacement tank, 1 month later and it would be another month! A tank was sourced elsewhere, but she's still rusty!

2 guys at work, they both bought the same make and model at the same time, 6 months later 1 still works, the other has had most things replaced on it and has given up and sits rusting away outside his house.

If you look after the bike then it should be OK, but they don't like rain much or the cold. I'd say look at spending your £400 on a CG125 (Not a copy), might be older but a lot less hassle.

£400 for the bike, £85 for delivery, £15 for tax, £38 for reg fee - Thats £538 - I may have missed it, but does it say it's delivered built or in it's shipping crate?

If you are looking for a cheap first bike to learn on have a look at Kymco
I learnt to ride on a Kymco Cruiser. It toped out at about 75mph and I am nearly 17 stone.

I have the Hongdou Shenda Cg 125 and I've never had any problems with it. It will be 2 years in September since I bought it.
Only problem I have had is a puncture which isn't really the bikes fault.

Of course I know it's not a fast bike but it certainly beats getting the bus so any bike wins for me.

All you need is a little cheap run around when starting out although I would like to know how yours is only costing £400 where mine cost £700 brand new.
Is it already built up or was it dismantled for packaging costs so you have to fix it up.
Mine I bought already set up.

How old are you? F cameron?
If you are under 21 then you can only get a light or standard motorcycle licence. Which limits the size of bike you can get

If over 21 you can do a DAS and get a more powerful bike after your test.

The internet has always been full of these cheep imports. Chinese usually. Dont got near them if you value your life.
The wife and I have quads and spend a lot of time off roading. My pal thought he would save himself money and buy a quad of the internet.
My Suzuki and my wife's Cat are going strong with a lot of off and on road racing. Our friend is still alive but his quad days are over. The thing fell apart and guess what no warantee.
It may seem cheeper but in the long rin its not. The same goes with riding gear, Buy the best you can afford and if its not good quality dont buy it.

hey, the bike will arrive with the front wheel and indicators removed, and should be able to be assembled in several hours with minimal tools. Hopefully the bike would be kept in a shed so that should sort out most of the water/cold.

Im 19, and looking at sitting my restricted test before the price shuffle next year.

Sounds like it'll arrive in it's crate - a couple of hours and more than a few tools!

I was in contact with somone who baught an almost exactly identical bike and wrote a blog following its contruction. With respect to assembly he said

"Firstly you won't need any mechanical experience to cope with putting one of these together because it's mostly already done. Just the front wheel and handlebars and centre stand I think. There are no instructions included but it's all pretty obvious.

As far as tools go, you need very few. A set of metric spanners being the main thing. you can pick up a set of combination spanners (open one end and ring spanner the other) for around £5 I think. Couple of screwdrivers and a hacksaw to saw up the crate angle iron."

Also as far as power goes the value quoted on the link is not correct, i checked it against the Kw output of 8.5, which correspond to 11HP, i contacted the seller and they confirmed this.

If you do go ahead and buy one can I give you a word of warning? The FIRST thing you should do once you have it assembled is drop out the oil that is in it and replace it. Not doing this is the biggest cause of Chinese bikes going bang that I know of as they use a thin mixture just to keep the internals lubed during shipping and it really isn't up to the job.
