Coz thats just what they'll do, one of these days these boots might just walk all over YOU...

Got my current ones last year, they have given a good account of themselves, but have now fallen apart under my hooliganism, that and 10 hours a day on the road.

Lets just say as you can see from the pics they now have added ventilation, which gets interesting when it rains.

Now heres what im looking for:

Protection, need ankle protection at the least, tried some short boots/hiking boot type thing the other day it felt too flimsy compared to a full race boot

Comfort i do alot of walking about in my boots so this is a priority too

Water Resistant, full waterproofing would be nice but not totally essential as were coming into summer now hopefully

Cost As low as a possible

Any recommendations?

Walking boots wont last half as long as them if your going to drag your toe around.

CAT's are crap, they are just fashion boots, had a pair and they fell to pieces with serious use, wouldn't wear them now if they were given to me, better with some Doc Martins. But you will have to stop dragging your feet as the soles will melt. Wink

Gotta be army boots. They have the added advantage over bike boots in that you won't look like a pillock when away from the bike wearing them.

the only thing with normal army boots is that laces and bikes arent an ideal combination

and they are a bit fiddly to take on and off compared with bike boots

which is where military issue bike boots come in

they have zip and velcro to fasten them so u only need to both with the buckles if u really want to, id probably cut them off

Just tuck the laces inside the other laces so they can't get caught on anything. Been going to work on the bike in my work boots for years and had no laces getting caught up.

Colin, how can you not see just how village people/harley rider-ish those boots are Shocked

Oh and so far sidi vertebrates have been the most comfortable boots ive worn cos of the flexible ankle. But ive done some serious walking in sidi blackrain's and not had any problems.

I'm always amazed at people who suggest army boots as viable footwear.
I have some jackboots which are alright, but no way as supportive/reliable /comfortable as my Asolo Powermatics.

British army combat boots are a waste of time as they are made of cardboard and have no support at all, as well as weighing half a ton. They're basically a big slab of rubber on the end of a welly.

Go with some altbergs.

Second vote for Altbergs.
Altberg make two product ranges - high quality bike boots, and serious walking / hiking boots. The bike boots are made so they are all day comfortable and can be walked in for serious distances, in comfort. They also have good protection and are totally waterproof. As a bonus, if you do wear them out Altberg will re-sole them for £30, or totally refurbish them for £40.
Altberg are standard issue for most police motorcyclists, and first choice of most bike couriers.
Mine are now four years old, and as good as the day they left the factory.

Oh, and if you go to them in Richmond, North Yorks they'll measure your feet and custom build them to your exact measurements for no extra charge.

Waterproof to the point of being able to go paddling in a pond, and dry off amazingly quick. Wink

So lightweight that when they were delivered I thought they were a small item I'd ordered in a big box. I would never have guessed what they were.
Wellies? Laughing maybe the most expensive wellies I've seen for a while.

Zimbo - I thought the first choice for couriers (in what I've seen) was anything held together with gaffa tape!! Laughing

Hi,

Fair point, I was referring to the assault boot but forgot that was what it was called.
How much did those boots cost you, out of interest?

Mine cost me about £60 new of ebay and I think Lozzypop1 got hers for £45 ish new. Retail should be around the £mark

They last about a year and a half of me couriering as well.

Why people bother buying bike boots with less protection, crap water proofing for more money I shall never understand.

£130 (ish) pounds RRP iirc

Mine were cheap (£45.00) as I have only got dinky little feet! Twisted Evil
Another thing, They do not make your feet smell as they are breathable as well as waterproof at the same time... Regardless, they work Thumbs Up

Bike specific, I use Sidi Black Rain for a lot of commuting, and often been known to wear them all day in the office with no problems.

As an alternative I've also used Army issue patrol boots as a slightly more comfortable alternative, particualrly if I'm going to an event and I'm likely to be walking a lot during the day.

I also have a pair of Prospecta safety boots which have a slightly looser fit, but have an added advantage of steel toecaps

Thinking Sorry Daz, but steel toecaps?? What are you thinking?? Madman!!
How do you like your toes? crushed or chopped? Mr. Green

Proboots: The RRP is cheaper than I thought! Pro boots - surplus&adventure.
Ebay is probably still your best bet for a bargain. (Doubt there will be many second hand/feet ones on there as they really are so damn comfortable from the first time you put brand new ones onto your feet, I wear mine almost every day now Very Happy )
So far only brand new pair I could find on ebay were in a size 13 Although there are a few that look like they may have been worn if you search "pro boot gore tex" (with all the spaces.)
Another good thing, they come in small, medium and large sizes, so if you have an unusually narrow or wider than average foot, you can still find a pair to fit properly! Thumbs Up

See this myth always concerns me. It may or may not be true, but it strikes me as being akin to the 'seatbelts kill more then they save' shite.

Ive had a couple of spills in work safety shoes, one of which bit into the metal nicely and demolished the leather completely in a 2 inch square area. I was absolutely fine, but i doubt i would of been in trainers.

Yet fook knows how many people i know ride in them regularly.

I ALWAYS ride in bike boots or toecap boots (mainly so i can still do gears firmly)
