PostPosted: 01:44 - 31 May 2007    Post subject: Trackdays, Noise Levels?? Reply with quote

Looking at doing a trackday in the near future, but the ones I've been looking at are db restricted. How do I find out whether my bike is below the limit before booking onto a trackday. The ones I have been looking at are at Snetterton and range from 98 to 105db.

Anybody know how I find out what my bike is putting out, as I dont want to book it, to get there and find the bike is over the restricted noise level.

Do NOT suggest putting the standard exhausts back on as I DO NOT HAVE THEM!!!

I have tried searching for info but drawn a blank there too.

Hi

99db if likely to be less than your bike puts out if you have race cans on it. 105db is fairly loud and you will probably be OK unless you have chosen the exhaust because it is loud.

Alot will depend how it is tested.

All the best

Have contacted both local MOT testing garage and local police HQ, and both have said they don't do them. Police said I would have to contact local environmental health services and MOT place said book it onto a trackday (I then explained to them that's what I wanted it done for as I don't want to book one to then find out that the bike is over the limit). They then said have no idea then.

Hmmm, just a thought, the MSS Kawasaki BSB team are five minute walk down the road from me, reckon they would be able to do it??

Just book the trackday, if your bike's over the limit then they'll sell you a baffle to stick up it's bum.

Has anyone on here ever had the noise level of their bike tested at a track day? I haven't.

See my post in the following thread: https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=116151

Relevant NoiseMeter can be gotten for less than £20.

Yes, quite a few times at MSV tracks now.

Are they public track days G, or race events?

I could swear I'd been to a public trackday where they had tested for noise, but can't recolect the specific one, so altered my post.

This is a case of MSV testing, not the trackday company or similar.
Normally there would be random tests by the race organiser as we come in.

MSV were requesting that everyone be tested before they go out on circuit, and you had to have a 'passed' noise test sticker on your front mudguard.

I haven't, but I know of people that have been tested at Castle Coombe (definitely, as they are very strict) and Donnington on a 'quiet' day.

Interesting issue here then. Maybe the TD organisers should point people in the right direction and offer some advice re noise and how/where to get it tested. They sure wouldn't give you a refund if you were over on the day!

Give em a ring mate.

Some details from hottrax:

I suspect if you go along to an MSV circuit and ask to be noise tested when you're not riding that day they'll help out anyway - call beforehand to check, though.

That is one way of doing it and I think that is how MSV circuits do it, but nothing to say that any particular track must test that way. They could choose to test at 20000rpm with the noise meter rammed up the exhaust (although no doubt it would only take a few minutes and a couple of blown up engines before someone killed them).

All the best

Keith

I recently went to a Focused Events trackday at Brands (13 April), and they tested everyone - you had to have a sticker displaying the fact that you had passed before they let you out.

Is Brands part of this 'MSV' organisation?

Interestingly, the rented R6 I was on failed - at 107dB, but they gave it the sticker anyway. It did have a full race system, but I didn't think it was that loud. Thinking

There was no rechecking through the day - my friend changed his standard can after testing and noone batted an eyelid Very Happy Pretty sure his Leo Vince would have passed anyway.

Yes, at the moment they aren't doing testing because they are being forced to, but in an effort to stop them being forced to, so they can use their discression.

I was at Brands on Friday and everyone was noise tested, the level was 101 db.
KTM 990 superduke failed with a standard system, had to make a temporary baffles from coke cans.

Oulton have been noise testing for a while now, however that was at 105db.

Perhaps MSV have dropped the noise level at which a bike will pass ?

My bike was tested at Snetterton (another MSV circuit) two weeks ago.

It only just met the 105db limit... Confused

My FZR400 failed on a trackday a few weeks ago for a reading of 108dB, the limit was 105. Surprised

A kind chap gave me a dB killer and another had a power drill at hand to bolt it into place. Brought it down to 97dB. Might be a worthy investment should you be worried.

Shame my bike only lasted a single lap before it went bang! Laughing

I was at a Focused Events day at Silverstone a few weeks ago and they never tested any bikes.
