gs500 VS sv650

ok so its almost time for a new bike (im doing my test soon)

I'm kinda stuck between these two bikes. I kinda fancy the SV because its taller (im 6"3) and theres more parts/exhausts etc to customise it with. However the GS seems practical and a decent option too (and possibly better for my budget)

I can't test ride them because I'd need them to be restricted

Any views welcome and appreciated

I'd go for a cheap early SV.

Though, I'd have thought the faired SV is less good for taller people if you're considering that. Should be able to get one from around £1k.

The SV should 'grow' with you as you learn a bit more.

Some places will allow test rides despite restriction.

I did my DAS on an old GS500 and I now ride an SV650 K3 2004, far superior bike. I am really enjoying mine If your looking for a commuter type bike that you can restrict, there's the ER5 or CB500. The ER5 seat height is higher than the GS500, which might suit your frame.

SV, i did my test on the same bike as toby has and its alot different, all though i had to say i really liked the handling and ease of use from the GS

I've parked my Divvy 600 and ZZR 600 both next to the old GS 500 E I learned on and they are massive by comparison. I'm 6 ft+ and the GS is too small and cramped for me. My school recommended the SV650S as the best option for a recently qualified new rider for ride, comfort and longevity as you shouldn't get bored of it too soon.

SV all the way between those two.

cheers guys. any other recommendations of similar bikes? bearing in mind my size and my budget of £1500

Apparently the honda cb500 is a better bike than the GS, but I doubt there's too much in it and the cb will be a little more expensive...

I used to own a GS500 and recently I test rode a couple of sv650s' for a friend.... theres a big difference. The GS is a budget commuter, fun for what it is, but the sv650s has a much nicer 'big bike' feel to it, I think its probably the better option.
