I'm trying to find whether there's a specific offence for not having a valid MOT on a vehicle - the nearest I can find is code IN10, "Using a vehicle uninsured against third party risks", as any insurance would be invalid, which carries 6-8 points. I've been blase about it in the past, but having 9 points tends to focus a person, somewhat Smile

While I'm at it, how about a quick poll. If you know your vehicle is maintained and would pass an MOT but it's just run out, would you still ride it?

Only to the MOT station....

You can never be 100%sure it will pass.

Tis far to easy to just get pulled over, then you would get the book thrown at you..

nah i wouldnt ride without it, i value my license too much. also it tests the bikes condition and if itd fit for the road, so for those who are not mechanically minded its vital.

Hi

The insurance company would still be obliged to pay out, so I do not think they would fiddle a charge of no insurance onto you for it.

Be a bit like catching you with a knife in your hand in a restaraunt eating a steak and charging you with carrying an offensiev weapon.

All the best

Keith

Having no MOT won't get you an IN10. If it went to court and you produced an insurance document it would be thrown out.

I wouldn't as I'd want to be sure if I was pulled by the police, I had no reason to be fearful, and the knowledge that I had no MOT would be an annoying downfall.

Only to the MOT station and I would make sure they had it booked in with reg number before hand too.

No MOT won't get you an IN10. Will try find out later what the offence code is for it. (family in police force)

I think the only applicable conviction would be:

MS60 Offences not covered by other codes

(Points as appropriate)

I've been riding without an MOT for the past week, i don't use it alot but usually when i pop down the shops, or the odd ride.
I know i shouldn't but it's getting done Wednesday so won't use it until then, probably. The guy's who are doing the MOT said it will pass after working on the bike.

Yeah right... there's only one other person here would ride without an MOT on something that is maintained and would pass an MOT? Razz

Not too bothered about the MOT thing, would like to say that I'd ride in a more legit way if missing paperwork like the MOT but errrr, that wouldn't be entirely correctly.

An MOT is so easy to pass on a bike its just not worth the risk. If it did fail on anything it genuinely does mean it shouldn't be on the road, whereas car ones can be a bit petty at times.

They dont even cost much on a bike.

I would be more than happy to ride without an MOT but then again I'm more than capable of knowing if something is dangerously wrong with the bike. Tell me one thing that they check that you can't do yourself within minutes?

Remember the MOT is really only saying that its OK at the time it was checked, a lot can go wrong in 12 months if that's what your relying on.

It's not whether the bike will pass or not, it's whether you'd ride without an MOT knowing that you could be done for it. I rely a tad more than a piece of paper to say if my bike is safe Smile

I used to drive round without MOT's for months - I used to 'align' them with my tax. However, on realising my insurance would be invalid without an MOT, I stopped it.

I need my licence for work, and am very proud that it is absolutely unblemished (largely because of the fact it should not be!), and I want to keep it that way.

If my bike can pass, then I'll have it done. Why save the £25 for a few months?

Done it loads of times, if you plan it well you can do 23 months on one MOT taxwise. The Mot is a joke, I keep my bikes maintained to a far higher standard.

So why not take it to an MOT, pass easily, and be legal?

How can you do 23 Months on one MOT?

If I stole your bike, and crashed it into someone's car, your insurance would still be liable to pay out, unless you managed to pin the accident on me.

On the flip side, if you're fullly comp, and crash with no MOT, they'll cover you on the same TPO basis. Doesn't make it legal though.

I was stopped by the police (speeding) and they did a check on my bike... turns out my MOT had expired about 2 weeks before. The copper asked me if I knew, honestly I replied that I didn't. He said that the bike looked in decent nick, said I should get it sorted, and that was all he said on the matter.
Was stopped at a routine stop the other day by a copper who was investigating an incident involving several motorcyclists, and he ran a check too - didn't even mention the MOT.

I got it done last week, failed on warped discs. I'd ridden in plenty since I was first told, but now I know there IS something wrong with it, it's staying in the garage.

In my accident (See here) they ran a check, and found my bike to have no MOT, and thus gave me a producer, failure of which, would have resulted in the charge of driving with no insurance.

Luckily, the computer messed up and I did have an MOT. The copper did have my going though. Mr. Green

I always have my MOTs done within 1 month of the expiry date (the extra weeks get added on) so have no opportunity to ride with no MOT.
