Hey Guys,

Quick question, just bought a car off Ebay and it hasn't got any tax (I assume it's SORN) now I'm not sure, but can it be driven home (Peterborough - Southampton)?

I have every intention of taxing the vehicle and I can't be certain but someone said there's a grace period on a newly bought car without tax?

I mean, it will be taxed for June anyway, so what's the difference?

Seems a bit out, and I don't want to get caught by a DVLA scameras! Rolling Eyes

Thanks, Thumbs Up

Matt

Technically illegal, but I'd do it anyway. Since you can't tax it til your insuance docs come through, and that just isn't convenient.

Just watch out for angry mobs shaking their fists at you on your way home.

Thanks Bendeh,

Interestingly, because I bought it on Ebay I get 7 days free cover with Norwich Union and they email you a cover note which you can print out, however last time I checked they won't accept computer printout cover notes.

Also, I can't get there before the weekend, if I can I will try and make it there before midday and get to a post office and hope they accept the printout! Shocked

No, it's illegal.

However, as long as it has insurance and MOT, I certainly would. Most cops would accept the fact that you'd just picked it up and give you a producer.

I got away with not paying tax for 2 months on one of my old cars... Shocked

What I thought, get pulled over by a reasonable copper and I can prove it's taxed and MOT'd + the fact I have just bought it, I should be able to get away with it.....however the numberplate cameras will just scan it, and it'll be flagged as 'not taxed'

I wouldn't believe half of this 'big brother is watching your tax disc' thing - I've driven untaxed vehicles on the road a few times and never heard anything about it.

You could apply for a tax disc online?

I mean, to the DVLA computer I wont even appear as the owner as the documents wont have even gone through!

I don't want to dump it on the seller however....

I'm somewhat bemused by the way you can pay for your tax online but they'll only send it to the registered keeper's address.

Surely if you could buy online, at any time of the night or day, it would actually solve this problem for loads of people. You might not have your disc in time to stick it on the windscreen, but you'd be all legally paid up. Your insurance would show up on the system as soon as you'd paid it, the MOTs are mostly electronic now... why do they care who pays for the tax disc as long as it's paid for?

Essentially, to be completely legal, you go see a vehicle, buy it, leave it there for days while you wait for the insurance docs to come through, then wait til Saturday cos you have to tax it at the post office which is only open during office hours during the week... it's actually far more effort and expense to be legal than to be illegal. Neutral

One word...

FRAUD.....

At least with it only going to the reg keepers address its not so easy. The system will check card details against the address its going to. May even reject payments from a card thats not showing the same address...

You could always get the old keeper to forward it on to you.

I do see what you are saying and it would be a great idea, but sadly anything like this is so open to the fraudsters, it simply would not work.... Just the same as they had to pull the online tax credit site due to fraudsters using it....

95% of cars that I stop for no tax have only just been bought. Or at least that is what they tell me anyway. I personally wouldn't make an issue of it as long as you are insured and you had an MOT.

You could of course be stopped by PC Tosser who would deal with it by the book.

Send it to the cardholder's address by all means, standard first line of defence for credit card fraud. But it shouldn't really be an issue if someone else wanted to pay your tax for you.

It's a pretty outdated system anyway, to be honest. Bits of paper stuck to windscreens, couldn't it just be linked to your reg number?

I asked if i could tax my bike after it was mot'ed and i was told by my insurer it usually takes a week before your insurance registers with the big computer system even after you have paid and have your cover note. Confused

Fair enough. I realised it might sound like i was speaking from a legal stand point once i'd wrote that. What i meant was that i did speak to the authorities and they said it shouldn't be a problem due to the circumstances.

Sadly ignored by many a online retailer.......

You are right there must be a far better way.
Get rid off it and add it to the fuel, no avoiding it then...

What I don't understand is if we pay fuel tax so we can drive a vehicle on the road, why do we pay road tax too?
