...Without taking it to a dealer to be ass raped.

Cut a long story short, I have a 2001 fiat punto which I put through a brick wall in ice 18months ago. I've had an engine warning light on ever since - even though there was no damage to the car other than a broken bumper.
I now want to sell the car and need to get it sorted. Is there a way I can do some DIY to turn it off?

Thanks.

It will most likely done via some diagnostics software, so i'd try an independent garage; otherwise i'd check ebay to be honest, i've seen a few warning light reset sequences for my car on there.

Have you got a manual? If you can look at the wiring diagram it may just be a case of cutting a wire.

Or

Good thinking. Perhaps you could reverse it through a wall? it may reverse the damage. Laughing

Have you actually given a few seconds to the thought that, seeing as how the warning light has come on, there may actually be a problem with it?

Remind me to never, ever buy anything from you, especially if there may be a fault with something and you're considering cutting wires to 'solve' the problem.

Thumbs Down Tut Tut Eh? Thinking

I checked for damage, nothing went passed the bumper, not to mention the fact I've been driving it for 18months with no side effects.

Well obviously something did go past the bumper, otherwise the light wouldn't have come on. Or it's a hell of a coincidence.

Have you tried disconnecting the battery for a bit? Or taking it to a dealership?

Well a sensor has obviously been triggerd from the jolt, but I can assure you there's nothing wrong with the car.

The engine warning light comes on because there is a diagnostic problem with the engine. You might not hear a fault, the engine might run fine, but something is up.

My engine warning light kept flashing up with me and I needed a new Stepper Motor, now the car runs better than before.

Replace the lambda sensor. It's ALWAYS the lambda sensor*

For all you know, some shit could have been sucked up the intake and shagged the airflow sensor. or something.

And you're a qualified Fiat mechanic and able to confirm this, are you? *Don't bother answering, I already know the answer.*

The warning light has come on for a reason, that's what it's there to do. The fact that you've been driving it around for 18 months like it, tells me all I need to know. If you actually went through the wall, then it could be dust in a sensor, or shit that's blocking an inlet, injector, anything. Nice that you're passing on the cost of fixing it to the person that's going to buy it.

Ever thought that if you'd actually gone into the dealership and just asked they might have just looked and reset it for nothing anyway? They're not ALL greedy morons.

As for not buying anything off you, don't worry, I'm pretty sure me and the rest of the forum won't ever do either.

See now this is the sort of helpful comment I'm looking for. I've heard about these lambda sensors before, I'll change it and see what happens.
No doubt even if it is the sensor, the warning light will remain on so that i HAVE to go to a garage to get it turned off.

What a great idea! Start replacing randon parts in the hope it works because you're too fucking idle to get off you duff, walk into the dealership & say "oi, why's this light on?"
Most places will run a scanner on it to read the code for FREE ya fucking moron. Rolling Eyes

They might do in yank land, but the garage I worked at certainly wouldn't be doing free diagnostic checks, you would end up with a garage full of people wanting free checks instead of paying customers.

oh yeah I nearly forgot.

n00b. This isn't a random visual healthcheck. This is if people have the engine management light come up on the dash randomly. Many garages offer to view the error codes for free. If you want the problem fixed you will have to pay.

The fact cqueen is so easily able to neglect such a problem means he doesn't care if the next owner has no end of problems with the engine afterwards. Exactly what the last owner of my car did, got rid of the car as soon as the engine management light came on without getting it checked out, leaving me (well the dealerships warranty) to pick up the pieces. If I had got the car privately in this state I would NOT be a happy chappy.

Just because you seem to have a grudge against ZRX61 doesn't mean his point doesn't stand.

A few tricks.

Press the switch that turns the light that actives the interior lights on the door 5 or 10 times.

Or Turn the ignition on and off 5 or 10 times but don't start it.

Works on a number of cars.

The light switch one has worked for a mate on a skyline worked for me on my Jeep as well for the airbag light.

The ignition one clears fault codes on most fords and a few other cars may be worth testing.

There is my point Jon, and you can stick that n00b shit up your arse, that post wasn't about a grudge at all, it was about an abusive post being made to some asking a legitimate question !

He asked a question and all people like you could do was bang on about not buying his motor, thats proper helpful that is, well done.

In fact, I pointed out that he ought to take it to the dealership as the light being on most likley means that there is a fault. (He's driven it through a wall, after all... Rolling Eyes )

As for not wanting to buy it from him. Too fucking right I wouldn't, nor anything else, now that I know he doesn't give a shit about stuff. Perhaps spouting it on an internet forum wasn't the best thing to do?
