Any MOT experts about?

I am considering buying a 1980 KE175D, just for fun. I would want to get it MOT'd, but noticed it doesn't have a chain guard. According to the manual it should have one, and the swingarm has mountings. Would it fail an MOT without one?

Cheers

Iain

Nope... if it was fitted and broken it might fail as being hazardous, but not being there will not fail it.

I took my guard off to keep an eye on the chain, and mine just passed its MoT without it...

Yes, there should be a chain guard. In my experience you can generally get away with something pretty minimal and cobbled together though, as long as it looks like you've made the effort.

Should be the work of minutes to bend one up with a bit of aluminium plate and a vice, especially if there are already lugs to take it.

There should be one fitted to the bike... but its not an MoT point unless damaged...

Meaning you can pass without one...

Oh, right. I always thought if there were lugs for one, you had to have one. A bit like lugs on the front forks for a fork brace.

Ran into that with my KLE. The forks are almost identical to those on a KLR but the KLE one has lugs on it for an integral mudguard/fork brace. Had to have a brace made up although I was sore tempted to just grind the lugs off.

I work on loop-holes mate...

Did you know if your headlights on your car stop working, just put masking tape over all the lights, front, rear and side, go to the MoT station, and say you only use your car during daytime in good weather and you use hand signals... and they can't fail you for the lights! Very Happy

With the majority of things, if they are fitted they must work (and be safe), if they don't work they will fail... you can remove front fog lights, a rear seatbelt, etc... you can even (sometimes) cut out a rear cross-member...

Thanks for that... If I get the bike I will take it without and see what happens... If it passes without I will post here to let folk know the answer. Of course, it may depend upon the tester...

I've MOTd a bike without one, and it passed.

This was an enduro bike though, I'm not sure that there were any mouting holes for one.

You don't have to remove front fog lights, they're just simply not tested.

My car has had one dead front fog light for 6 years, and it's never been mentioned in an MOT.

Whilst true, you get a stamped daytime MOT meaning you'd have to get it retested when you get your lights fixed, just in case you wanted to use it at night. If you wanted to be strictly legit of course.

Tut-tut... the MoT tester handbook says front lights should be tested if fitted!

But they are still not tested. Laughing And never have been, they only might need switching on to make the rear one/s work.
