ok iv been on 2-strokes my whole life so far, and now have a cbr 600, just wondering about engine braking really, as i get none on my dt125, iv had a go on my mates 110cc pit bike (4 stroke) and noticed when changing down a gear the back wheel feels like a brake is locking hard on, just after tips on how to reduce this such as changing down at lower revs or blipping the throttle and such.

also how easy is it to lock up the back wheel completely under engine braking? quite worried about this Embarassed . Cheers

Just don't drop down the gears too soon or pop the clutch out too quick and you'll not have any issues...

more power in the engine means more engine braking power, so if you drop down too soon the revs go high causing a large amount of engine braking to be put upon the bike....

Shift down later and user the front brake also.

engine braking has less to do with the power output of the engine, and more about the rotating mass, number of firing cycles and bore/stroke.

4 stroke engines have more internal friction than 2 strokes, due to having to move all those valves, cams and associated gubbins..

between 4 and 2 cylinder 4 strokes, twins often have more engine braking due to the longer stoke of the engine, meaning it has to decellerate and accelerate the pistons over a greater distance.

I keep being told in my lessons to use the engine only for braking when coming towards a stationary hazard(perked cars etc,) or junction or roundabout. My problem is that on my cg125 the engine braking seems pretty non existent.

I mean i would have to start slowing down 1/2 a mile up the road!!

You sure he didn't mean the only time to use engine braking? You should really use your front and/or back brake so your brake light comes on and warn other road users that you're slowing down.

And if you can't feel the engine braking then you probably need to go down a gear.
