Did a search and didn't find a thread. If already started just give me the thread URL.

Anyhow, heard there's a proposal that the UK comes into line with the rest of Europe and only performs MOT on vehicles every 2 years and the first MOT from new is after 4 years (rather than 3). Found some info here.

So any thoughts on how this will affect motorcycles?

Given that a bike can be unsafe the minute it's ridden away from an MOT is it a good idea to ride it for 2 years. Or as most (admittedly newer) bikes are only ridden in the summer months then will it make any difference?

Any thoughts?

The MOT should be scrapped and a new test that actually means something put in place, anyway.

There was another thread about this, but I can't find it either Confused

If you are the type of person who maintains your own bike, then you know whether it's safe or not, regardless of a bit of paper saying so. 2 year MOTs will mean more deathtraps on the road, as a lot of people only do something about the state of repair if it fails.

[edit] Found it :-

No on this subject I think Europe has got it wrong.

It should be yearly and quite possible every year from new, not the 3 years it is now.

I'd like to know every thing is in order and safe.

It should remain at a year but for half the price. Or a little bit less.

This already applies to Emergency Vehicles.

The reason for the change is to bring the UK in to line with other EU countries that do them bi-annually. It has been easier to get the UK to relax their rules rather than get others to tighten theirs.

The MoT inspection is pretty thorough, although it does depend on the actual tester and his opinion.

Of course the best thing would be to copy Sweden's example: They set up spot-checks for specific things, e.g. tyres, and every vehicle is stopped and checked. Doesn't take long, and as you never know when and where the checks will be (they do them on Motorways, A-roads, country lanes etc.) or what they're checking for, most people keep their vehicles in good order.

The checks can also be for alcohol, vehicle insurance, driving licence etc. not just the condition of the vehicle. Of course there would be uproar if everyone had to carry their documents with them here, but it's normal elsewhere in the EU. Same as ID cards Very Happy

We had a company car that failed its 1st every MOT through an old work of mines and it was fairly major stuff, I don't mind the MOT testing.

The whole MOT and Tax rules (MOT cert and insurance needed for tax) works well. Less dodgy folk kicking about.

Maybe slighty OT, ever watch Pimp my Ride?? How the hell are those cars legal in the states with the nick some of them are in? They would never pass an MOT over here....shocking!

In many parts of the US there are are no vehicle inspections and therefore nothing to keep them off the road...

TBH I don't see the problem with the initial 3 year period of non-testing, I've never had a car that failed it's first MOT.
