I don't know if you guys consider a quad a bike but anyways I think something could be learned from this ;
Yesterday was on the moors and we noticed a 17 year old guy on a Quad wheezing between farms ,I said to my girlfriend if that guy gets hit by a car with just t-shirt ,jeans it won't be nice !
A bit later we drove up the road ,the car in front had just stopped on a bend then this same guy on the quad smashes into it coming the other way.
Old folk in the car in front so my girl and myself are first on the scene . He was lying almost in the recovery position with blood running down the road under him ,my girlfriend ran to a farm to call an air ambulance (no mobile signal) why I tried to patch this guy up who was not responding. He had several whole teeth on the road ,deep gashes in the wrists ,head ,jaw ,blood from his left ear ,deep large chest gash !
The old people were passing me bandages and I did my best to patch him up ,my hands and lower forearms were soaked in blood ,I was waiting for him to stop breathing due to the extreme blood loss ,thankfully he did not .
Then this old guy come over claiming to be a auxiliary nurse ,he clearly new more than me (out of date first aider) so he took over from me .
He then said that he wants him in the recovery position even though he was almost in it already and turned him onto his back saying that he needs to check the chest injury Shocked Confused I did not have a chance to stop him .
I mentioned to the air ambulance that he had been turned and the nurse made a hasty exit .
I phoned the hospital but as I'm not family they won't tell me much ,last night I was informed he was critical .
I reckon he hit the stationary car at about 40 ,which has made me think again about riding on a hot summer day without all my gear on ,yes most of his injurys were head ,but he also had some near fatal body injurys too !

Ouch.

Hopefully he'll pull through.

If you ride around in just a t-shirt, expect to get really hurt.

I don't wear my leathers all the time, especially when bimbling around London but the minimum kit is gloves, summer riding jacket and thick jeans.

Where was this? (roughly)
Most farms with livestock have quads and like bikes new riders of them get a bit over enthusaistic aboutthe ablities of the machie and themselves.
They aren't brilliant on the road and can get out of control if you break hard.
(plus often not maintained very well it must be said)

You aren't required to wear a helmet on the road with them but bizarrely Health & Safety regs mean you are supposed to if using one at work in a field!

Lol, cos a leather jackets gonna stop the internal injuries Rolling Eyes

But yeh, theres a guy round here with a quad who always blasts round in a t-shirt and sunglasses with his bird on the back. It looks fun, but whats always worried me the whole 'crash compatability' thing.

Cars are designed to be little safe capsules (the passenger cabin anyway), the whol car would just go through you.

At least on bikes you're vaulted over the top.

Glad you find it funny Thumbs Down

Who said he had internal injurys ?
A bikers jacket would have stopped or at least lessoned the chest and forarm gash !
But I'm sure in all you wisdom you know better !

Will stop you from losing x pints of blood through abrasion though.

Its a very complicated situation with Quads, My wife and I have Quads. My wife has a utility Quad (Arctic Cat) Its big and strong, It will go anywhere especially with the winch fitted. It has a tow hich and can easily pull a dumper truck.
I have a sports Suzuki relentless 400cc, (BTW Sharons Cat Is 650cc)
They are both V-twin engines, Mine is builts for speed and ofroad racing.
personally when I am on my Quad I am covered in Offroad Wolf Sport Gear. (full armour) I never thing it is fine to carry a pelion on the Quad. It totally miss balances every thing.
The wife uses hers nearly every day.
They are both road leagal and we pay the same as joe bloggs with his Fiesta. You see officially a Quad is a car. You need a full car licence to drive one and really you need to be over 25 to be-able to get insurance at a reasonable price. If you can drive a car and you can ride a bike Please dont think you can drive a quad, They handle totally different to either.
ANY ONE who rides a Quad with out proper instructions and with out the proper gear will be F,U,B,A,R when things come a cropper. I have been riding and racing quads for a while now and they still bite me in the ass now and again when you least expect it. Couple of months ago was breaking in to a slide of road (which I have done many times at this place) With no warning I was on my back with the quad on top of me. I wiggled my finger's and toe's, Thought I ok kicked the quad of me rolled it back on its wheels and rejoined the race.
Good fun day out though.

Trouble is with quads is if you hit a corner too fast the only way to stop it flipping is to widen your line.

Modern cars are designed more for pedestrian safety than ever before. They must have soft areas built in if they hit someone.

Also your only vaulted over the top if you hit the wings of a car sideon(if your lucky), anywhere else and you are body slammed into it.

I fell off a quad bike in Southport when I was a titchy little kid years ago. They used to run them round a short sandy circuit as part of the funfair and I was given a full sized quad because there weren't any junior ones left. I was just wearing shorts and a t-shirt and as I went round the first bend I just fell off the side of it, the rear wheel skidded over my leg still accelerating and I was left with major skin damage that took several months of constant bandage changing to heal!

If only that happened nowadays... I'd make ten's of thousand's out of it!! Rolling Eyes Wink

As we all know you can hire quads when you go on holiday abroad.
Heres a couple of tips for you to keep you safe.
Make sure you have a cut off lanyard and wear it. when taking corners at speed, Put all your weight on the side of the turn, touch the break as you enter the bend and throttle through the turn, The rear wheels will drift. This will make corners safer. Always wear the right gear, (quads are unstable) Drive within your experience. Dont try drifting on soft ground, The outside wheels will dig in and you will be on your back with quad on top of you. When pulling away near a corner, take extra care. (the front of the quad will lift and you will not turn) Lean forward over the handle bars.
If your thinking of a quad and want some advice contact me I will be happy to help you.
finally especially with quads avoid cheep imports they really are death traps

yeah thanks guy's ,I'm really shocked as is my girlfriend !
I thought he was going to bleed to death at the scene but once he arrived at the hospital I thought he would be okay !
He had swelling of the brain which killed him ,it was his last day on work placement (which involved riding the quad between farms )just turned 17 !
Have to give another police statement tomorrow seems a bit pointless now !
You hear of these things but its not untill your directly involved that it hits home !
Condolence to friends and family Sad
