I've only got a year left at college now and I won't be going to university.

Can I be an instructor ar 17/18? What are the options for me?
Any instructors on here who could give me advice?

Cheers

Sorry, you've got to be over 21 and have had a licence for at least 3 years

Getting *loads* of experience can only help. If you're dead set on being an instructor maybe do some couriering to get the hours on bike.

Most courier places want experience as well tho, so you might find you'll have to start with pizza delivery or something

A good start would be to do BikeSafe and then join the IAM (Institue Of Advanced Motorists). That will put you on the right track for it as you will need to be in the IAM really anyway and there is no age limit to start it (so you can get it out of the way).

Have you considered whether it will actually be worth your while becoming one in your area? Are you sure the demand for it is there? If your area is already saturated with instructors then you may find a problem getting customers.

Although you cannot qualifiy as an instructor yet, there is nothing to stop you from becoming a training assistant with a local school so that you learn the ropes, which will in turn help you decide whether or not instructing is really for you.

I used to take on newly qualified riders as training assistants, particularly those who had noteable ability, and dutring the three year wait I would get them up to speed on everything they needed which then made it far easier when they went to Cardington.

At this stage, if you are serious about becoming an instructor, don't think too much about doing advanced stuff as it will confuse you big time.

The differences between CBT/DAS and advanced are quite different and many advanced instructors (not all granted) have difficulty in getting back to grass routes from an instructional point of view simply because what we look for in advanced training goes against what the DSA are looking for at learner level.

It was for this reason I used to leave all the CBT and DAS training to my senior instructors and I concentrated just on advanced unless my input or help was needed at learner level.

Instructing can be a thankless task, so becoming a training assistant might be the best option at the moment to help you decide whether or not it is something you really want to take up.
