I've been looking at insurance costs for my next bike and there is a large gap between TPO and TPFT for example.

TPFT
SV650S 1999 = £966.00 with a £250.00 excess.
CBR400 1995 = £958.00 with a £450.00 excess.
R6 1999 = £1,512.00 with a £350.00 excess.
CBR600 2000 = £1,643.00 with a £350.00 excess

TPO
SV650S 1999 = £453.00 with a £0.00 excess.
CBR400 1995 = £583.00 with a £0.00 excess.
R6 1999 = £656.00 with a £0.00 excess.
CBR600 2000 = £677.00 with a £0.00 excess.

all these examples are for 19yrs old 1yrs NCB which i'll have in a few months.

Some pretty large price differences there, now what i want to know is would TPO be a good idea and just use some of the spare cash to invest in a few more security items Alarm/Immobalizer, ground anchor etc.

i already have a large chain, disc lock and U lock and can easily strap a bag to the back seat to keep all the locks in to use when im out and about, and overnight it would be kept in a locked garage.

So what are your thoughts?

Zak

Im also trying to make up mind TPO is very tempting. I dont think i would leave my bike alone for more than 10 minutes anyhow and shrewsbury (where i live) is a pretty peaceful area.

It would be a b*tch if it got nicked tho Confused

Its really up to you, concider these things...

1) where would you be leaving your bike and for how long
2) will i be smoking while riding the bike with the petrol tank open Rolling Eyes
3) what is the crime rate in your area

probably a few more things you should be concidering but that should start you off. If your short for cash it may be a good idea to go for TPO, be extra careful for a year and rack up a few no claims... then you can go for TPFT or comp another year.

Just my thoughts Smile

If I had any of those bikes you used as examples, I would definately get TPFT. If you get TPO and the bike gets robbed, u will really regret it!

At the moment I have TPO, but that is just cuz my bike was dead cheap to buy, so its not *that* important to get TPFT.

If a thief wants your bike - they will get your bike. All these security things only slow them down.

I'd go for something like an old blade/crb6 that's <=£2500 and get TPO and a big chain... some bikes you could also consider:
TRX850
(Old style)Speed Triple
Thundercat/Ace
Bandit 1200/ZXR/etc

Personally I wouldnt have TPO. Youd be better off having a bike that cheaper to insure first to build up your NCD. When you get to 21 that will make quite a difference to your premium as well.

Or have a sex change operation Laughing

mmm...yeah, but the average "pikey" probably wouldn't be able to actually steal the bike, but end up smashing it up out of spite Evil or Very Mad GRRR...in which case, TPFT would be pretty much useless Confused

What i'd probably do is get some replacement fairings, scrape em up a little bit (or just give them to Zim Wink), and then stick them on the bike whenever I go to work/town etc. Also, I'll get an empty tin, fill it up with old nuts (or whatever), and put them under the seat, so you'll have a nasty little rattle wherever you go! Razz ...who'd nick a bike like that, eh?

Yes, but I think that only covers things like ignition barrel, fuel lock to stop claims for damage that could easily have alternate causes.

Buy a bogger, insure it TPO, NEVER EVER EVER ride it, leave it in the garage to accumilate NCB, then after a year or two, you have some discount.
(Also protects your NCB if you have a real crash on your real bike.
naughty but nice. Twisted Evil

Well I don't care about insurance that much, if it was upto me I wouldn't have it, only have it cos it's a legal requirement. I always get TPO, and my aim is when I am older to get a C90 and insure it fully comp with that cover that I can ride any bike and be covered TPO on my insurance, then go out and buy my blade and gsxr thou Very Happy methinks fully comp on a C90 I should get change out of a tenner Laughing

You only get insured to ride other bikes that you *dont* own, so youd have to get someone else to register it for ya.

Plus scoob, the bike you are riding has to be insured by someone else for your Full comp to cover it.

I don't believe in TPO myself purely cos there are too many thieves around these days and with TPFT you get covered for ANY damage in an attempted theft as long as it's obvious that's what they were doing with MOST insurance companys but there are a few exceptions to the rule.
