Lovely looking bikes but cost lots of wedge. Probably a thief magnet too. ____________________ FS1E (73) -> RD125LC (86) -> Honda Bros 650 (88)

ive recently gone off ducati monsters (apart from the M900dark)
mainly because the design doesnt do the engine justice, just looks like its seelotaped there or something. ____________________ Blue_SV650S wrote: it was a sh1te wheelie, but it proves that he can get it up in 3rd and can do angles. Well, I've had the 695 as my first bike for over a year now and love it. Have a look here for my non-techie review. There are quite a few 695s in the UK now (what a trend I started!), so have a look in the UK Monster Owners Club site. Without exception, we've all been really happy with our bikes. I know people from Ducatisti who've had the big Ducatis for years that have now bought a 695 just to have fun with on the twisties, and have relegated the big bikes for touring. Not that you couldn't tour with the 695, I did perfectly happily.
The 695 is a very easy bike to ride, it's light and nimble. You'll love the slipper clutch of the new 620s and the 695s, I rarely use more than two fingers to engage it. When my bike had her second service, the garage gave me an ER5, aka an absolute pile of shit. Compared to the Duchess, it felt so heavy and badly balanced, and was totally gutless, too. My scoot's got more oomph than the ER5. Oh, and the new Ducatis have an increased service interval, so in the long run, are not more expensive than the more frequently serviced Japanese bikes, no matter what those affected by Ducati envy will say. The first big service is at two years, and I've been quoted £600.
I'd say it's an ideal first bike, I certainly have had no problems with it. Sure, the turning circle isn't brilliant, but that's only a problem in tight turns or parking, but so what, car drivers just have to learn to be a bit more patient when I park in my bay.
I've never had a used bike, nor would I ever consider one. I quite like the fact that nobody else has thrashed it, nor will I have to worry about costly repairs for a few years.
Some people will tell you not to get a new bike, as "you'll only drop it". On the other hand, having a brand new bike may make you more careful and take fewer risks.
But if you drop it, there won't be expensive fairing repair, and if you spend £100 on R&G crash bungs and bar ends, you'll save your £1,000 tank, £34 mirrors and £17 levers. Handlebars are made of mozzarella, though, so even in a low speed off you may have to replace them at about £80.
One good thing about Ducatis is the very active club scene, what with Ducatisti, UKMOC, DSC, Upnorth, DOCGB providing activities and advice. I could go on a Ducati ride-out every weekend, if only I had the time.
As for it being a thief magnet, Monsters (and Ducatis in general, with the exception of the 748) rate amongst the least stolen bikes. Thieves love gixxers, etc, not the naked Monsters, which are not known for their fast speeds. They're perfect in town and in twisties, but you'll be wishing you had a faired bike at anything above 70-80mph (unless you're short like me).
A friend of mine on Ducatisti (Mini Mo) is selling his absolutely immaculate, low mileage (not used for commuting and stored in the winter) 620; the ad is here. ____________________ My other bike's a Monster... |
