My first proper off and not just a near one.

Well let me say about the first half of the day... tagged onto back of a group of 3 bikers at Kirton Lindsey to the woods and absolutely hooned it, CBR6RR, R1, and an RSV1000. All up close knee-down each corner showering sparks it was awesome. Anyway we went to Mablethorpe - another ace rideout probably the best I've been on.

It wasn't until the way back that things turned inevitably wrong for me. We were on a long stretch with alot of bends mile or so up ahead of the straight, lads in front had overtaken a group of cars which I couldnt get past even with the stupidest of overtakes so anyway when I did I had to make two or three corners difference up to catch up. Did the first 2 or 3 really well it was when I got to a bit I had forgotten about which messed things up. Left, then Right so coming out of the right I was towards the middle but then a sudden tight right and I thought it was a left, so being in the centre I wasnt in the best place to start off the turn in anyway. Turned in got half way round and realised I aint getting round, tried leaning insanely further off but still not enough to get it round. I'd already caught a cats eye so that didnt do me any favours and unsettled it and pushed me out a bit more so I tried knocking the speed off instead. Got onto the white line and knew that I was coming off the road, so let off the brakes and tried running off alongside the road onto the grass.

Great plan, but it slipped onto its side and there I was nearing a bush. Thinking where im going to end up, here comes the camera moment, I jump off the bike into a bush as in the milliseconds of thought upon going off road I thought bailing into a soft-ish bush was best.

Now I was stopped, laid in some bushes looking up thinking which way around I was and where the road was. I pop my head up the bank and realise then think oh god turn the engine off so I uncovered the bushes and rubbish and managed to find the kill switch and sorted that. Thankfully the bush worked wonders and aswell as cushioning my coming to a stop, its cushioned my bike 'a little' and no bent levers/forks/frame just plastics.

Looks like new mirror and R/H upper fairing panel, mirror and front fairing. So what, £150 ish. For now though I'm going to glue it up with this special fairing glue I got ages ago and see how that goes. It'll do while pay day, and for MOT I hope as there'll just be two or three gaps in the fairing which I cant see will affect that?

Thing is the after feeling isn't an oh god i'm selling up and no longer doing bikes. When I came off I got up and was like, oh I came off, right lets get it back on the road. And its not like its going to make me want to slow down all the time either, its more of a mental thing. I didnt 100% know the road and with 3 bikers being in front on the way there it was good being able to tell by their speed/turn in how I could go round a bend. It was when I decided to push up the speed even more on my own to catch up without there being people infront to gauge entry speeds and lines that I messed up - if that makes sense? The mental thing was theyre on bigger bikes and if I dont make up some time in the bends which I can stay with them on, Im not going to catch up. I outdid myself.

https://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/rhysbarratt/10062007259.jpg

Couldnt have been happier with the guy who stopped and helped pull it out, I managed picking it up but no way was I going to pull it back up the 3ft bank. Guys infront noticed about 5mins later and arrived back, helped bump start after it wouldnt fire and sort stuff out like the removing of grass/bush camo it aqquired and clunking things back into place. Good thing is it was rideable the whole way back and I'm fine so just superficial damage. I realise I was VERY lucky to have come off how I have, both cost-wise and to my health. (long term anyway)

3hrs later, the flying into a bush at 35/40mph ish which felt kind of cool in the moment, is now abit sore though!

I thought that too! its almost like a flood of posts. I had to refresh the bcf spill counter thread and yes what I had was out of date already!

The weather brightening mid-ride, great roads, and meeting some other bikers up for it just sent me into hoon mode Very Happy

Sorry to hear man, damage really isn't bad at all thankfully. Think M+P may do reproductions of your fairing, not 100% though.

That's a dangerous game to get into that lands up with all four of you going through the same hole in the wall.

Agree, I was at the back today all day its where I prefer, I dont like to be a pace 'setter' I like to play catch up and see other bikes infront etc. I do tend to find I have to be willing to take risks if people in front get ahead after say an overtake/traffic lights/straight etc. I had some 'trust' in the guy at the front today but to be honest like you say that is all it is.

Is that sarcasm? just to make it clear I dont hoon all the time, I do alot of on my own riding not much in groups. I have learned from this and some points made here, that is not to try push myself even more to catch a group when I'm already at the point of hooning anyway on a road I dont know.

The way I'm going to improve is when group riding to make it clear before to people not just names to bikes, but to do regular mirror checks to see if riders are there after traffic lights, straights or built up traffic. Not to take huge risks overtaking if say the 3rd biker in a group of 4 - as to make the 4th biker stuck behind with a group of 3 infront gaining way. But instead if the first two get past then the third should wait so its two seperate groups of two. This would lessen the urge I think for the person at the back to take risks like when overtaking or catching up. Smile

Playing keepy-up is a dangerous game. The guy up front rides safely but you will need to take risks to catch him because your road conditions will not be the same as his.
What does it matter if you get home a bit late? It is getting home that is important not the time that you get there.
Never be afraid to tell someone that you can not ride as fast as they can. Glad you are ok.

Unlucky is all I can say really, that's why you leave enough margin for error on unfamiliar roads, in fact on roads you know like the back of your hand too. I'm not gonna go all high and mighty on you though as I'd have been trying to catch up too.

Hope the bike's sorted quickly Thumbs Up

So where did you come from to meet up with riders at kirton lindsey? I only live about 3 miles from there and am trying to visualise the route from mablethorpe to work out where you bushed it?

which bit of road was it?

went from kirton lindsey from the crossroads to hemswell, from hemswell across to market rasen. Then from market rasen to caistor to meet someone, and from there to mablethorpe. We took the road which is from Willingham woods up the hill and past the crossroads - towards Louth way I think.

Some nice roads round here.
Coming off isn't pleasant though, as there are too many ditches. Laughing
