what is a quality control trainee ?

Obviously its a trainee , but what does a quality control , person do ?

Out of work atm so a trainee job wouldnt be to bad to give me a career but what is a quality control person?

What kind of industry is it in?

My Dad did some quality control stuff as a student for Findus, which basically involved picking mud out of peas and making sure there were enough peas in each bag, and other such exciting jobs. He reckoned it was great fun though

Most likely testing the odd electrical good on the line making sure it's fit for purpose, or checking it's all complete etc.. Basically enough so that they can sell it to the general public. HTH

I work in the electrical industry and if its for a product manufacturer, well.. when we get a light fitting for example theres usually a check list for QC. .. its usually checking the moulding is right with no defects, the wiring is all in place and no damage, that everything is in the box and packaged correctly etc...

thats usually what QC entails.

I worked as a Quality Manager within industry for a year and now do something similar, but with people rather than products.


As you are a trainee, you will be working to particular guidelines that will be defined either by the company you work for or an international standard such as the ISO standards. You'll probably start out as a test-monkey, testing a particular range of products and you will be told which to test (or provided with them). This will be to ensure you get a mixed sample.
Each product will have defined pass/fail criteria, so you just record the outcome for each test you do - make sure you paperwork/records are really clear to ensure an audit trail for anyone investigating errors.

You should, I hope, get involved in designing the testing procedures to understand different selection methods. You may also be fortunate enough to be involved in the design of production methods to ensure quality.

I would hope you will be involved in any investigations as well. This is where a product may have failed after it has been purchased and you will investigate the processes and path the product followed to find if and what went wrong.


My tips for a good interview:
Read up on Six Sigma and Taguchi (Robust design)
Quality can be really interesting if you are able to get involved in every level of the work rather than just being a "lab rat".
