I was looking for various house buying/renting sites while bored at work today and was seeing the usual depressing stuff. House prices sky high and rent pretty high as well. A double room down here is between £350-425 a month with a small single room flat at around £700. House prices are ridiculous.

I thought for a laugh I'd see how much they are oop north so just whacked in 'Rotherham' into the site as it sounded suitably grim and northern and FOOK ME. I saw 4 bedroom houses with gardens and seperate garages for about £650 a month. Holy moly that's cheap. Get a few mates together and you're laughing. Houses were much cheaper as well - I'd actually be able to afford one.

Then I realised why. It's up North and no-one wants to live there Laughing

Nothing wrong with folk up north cept we dont take kindly to southerners insulting us. While you are looking at house prices up here try looking at wages and you'll find they're also low.
You stay down there, you wont like it up here. it'll be too cold for you and folk wont be able to understand your accent.

Like Owdamer says, the reason it's cheaper up North is cause the wages are much lower as well.

Bollocks.

About the same, only place there is much of a differance is within london where you get much higher rates to cope with property prices.

The people in the south are far worse than those in the north.

Unfortunately you get little blips of expensiveness within 'The North'. Try getting somewhere that cheap in York.

No, really, please try, and tell me if you find something!!!! Laughing

Lot cheaper up here, my fiancee used to live in Eastbourne and the cheapest housing down there (of liveable quality) were 1 bed flats coming in a £100k, up here we've just bought an 8 year old 2 bed end of terrace for £104 Thumbs Up that said, wilmslow, York, Chester - You'd be lucky to buy a shed for that.
As for wages - depends what job you do. I can only speak for IT trade, I'm earning over the average salary for that sector. People are much friendlier oop north, we've got FAR more quality football teams. and we're much further away from the French Mr. Green

Its not as simple as north / south.

I had a flat in southend which cost me 400 a month, I have had 2 bed houses in stockport for 500 a month, I am now in a 1 bed flat in stockport that is just short of 500 a month, Its about the area, not so much north/south.

Come a bit further up north to Edinburgh. Crazy at the moment here, relatively anyway. Not as expensive as London perhaps... Bedsits £400 a month, oddly the same minimum for a 1 bed flat, (I never know how these folks manage to pedal a bedsit when for the same money you needn't have to cook your tea in your bedroom.)

The adverts that get me are the private lets, some them ask for way to much. £500 for a one room bedsitter for example, we looked at a supposed 2 bed flat in a very average area, it boasted a "large communal living area." It was a one bed flat where they'd just turned the sitting room into another bedroom, the communal area was the kitchen: £650 a month for this.

A pal has just bought a flat; £113k and its a shoe box. It is in a 'trendy' part of town though. Still, I wouldn't buy anything just now, hell; I couldn't buy anything at the moment. Rolling Eyes

I could maybe stretch to a static caravan, but why would you? Laughing

I lived a 'bit' up North (Kings Lynn area) for a couple of years and it is cheaper than the sunny south.

It is also more laid back but there does seem to be less work. I could not find any IT work that paid any more than a school leavers salary . . . I was just as well off on job seekers allowance and doing some cash in hand weekend work (coaching skydivers and packing parachutes) tee hee - was fun for a while.

There were lots of agricultural/laboring jobs.

Having said that, I'm sure there must be decent jobs to be had in places like Leeds/Newcastle?

As for houses, it's shame so many people can't afford to buy. It is it seemed the best standard investment a person can make with their money.

I am very very lucky to have my own place and whats more its in the SOUTH Dance!

Joe will have to marry me after all Wink Laughing

I do realise that is is only possible if your very lucky. But, I know of quite a few people that have had their parents act as a guarantor and loaned them deposit money.

There's a lot of IT contract work in Edinburgh, and companies pay a fair bit to put staff up there during the week. Our staff bill for accomodation that we charged to Standard Life was huge, so they started sorting the accomodation themselves for us. People will charge what they can get away with, and if someone will pay £1000 a week for a broom cupboard, that's what people charge.

And that's how'd we'd like to keep it thank you very much Razz

We Northeners enjoy telling people how much of a shithole the North is so that more people don't move up here and spoil it's true untouched beauty.

For example, Smaller population than the south - smaller amount of cars on the roads = not as much traffic on the roads = in some areas the roads are in perfect condition = not as much noise and pollution. Since there are fewer people it means we can buy houses with gardens you see , we like our big open spaces, not cramped terraced house which when you look out the front and back windows all you see is more terraced houses. The houses are cheaper, more value you for your money and the kids get to have an area to play around in, not the so called "Concrete Jungle" Wink Disclaimer - Comments to be taking with a pinch of salt and could be widely debated Wink

The bottom pictures own the top picture Razz

Not going to boast our great northern attributes, but we like it as is, without any sarf lot Mr. Green so insult all you like, we all know it's just jealousy. Wink Laughing It is kind of cheap, but it depends where you look, and the type of people(landlords) that are lending/selling.

I live in Leyland, Lancs and my 3 bed detached house with garden and garage cost £167000, you can keep living down south thankyou.

the area I live in is insurance band A so car and bike insurance cost jack shit. I once tried using a london postcode on an insurance quote once and it was triple what it was where I am. Shocked (my bike insurance is £79 Laughing )

Although saying that I spend more time down south working at the moment than I do at home. Crying or Very sad

I've got a work placement for a year in Winchester and when looking afor houses to rent the first one we looked at was £75 a week (what?!) for a room that end to end was the length of a single bed (as in the bed just slotted into the length of the room! WHAT?!

Here in Birmingham I have a room which I would honestly put at 4 times bigger and it costs £50 a week in an area which ain't too bad considering.

I would love to know how much it costs to rent a room in Halifax where I was before uni.

But then again, like others have said, I love the north. Halifax may have its bad areas, but it has very nice areas with hill views and low congestion. But then again, listening to these Londoners you'd have thought small house / crap location / mass overcrowding was a bonus.

I'd rather earn less, but get cheaper houses, cheaper food and amenities etc than live in that 'cultural melting pot' which is actually just a crime ridden cess pit.

Long live the north with its beautiful countryside, great prices and friendly people (we don't treat every single person we see as competition ya see Wink )

Warning though... you do still get the socially inept families who are on asbos, but they tend to stick together. In general, I htink the image put onto the north is a bit misleading when you go outside of the city centres.

You should go down the Elland bypass between Huddersfield and Halifax.
Potential to be an absolute awesome road with a nice long left sweeping angle to it going slightly downhill with a 'nice' view over Elland on the left, but oh no... covered in cameras.

Maybe West Yorkshire can be exempt from the 'no cameras' rule Smile

Out of interest, where abouts in Yorkshire are you from?

The way you northern lot are talking about the south of England, you'd think the whole of south England was just London and its surrounding area.
Most of the rest of the south of England is actually pretty nice.

Perhaps if it wasn't so poverty stricken up norf you'd be able to afford a trip down to have a look for yourselves. Wink Wink
