I've only ridden a cg round a car park, but I have ridden a very similar bike (yamaha sr125) for a while.
Basically I found that if you want its full potential, you need to keep accelerating until it just feels like the bike won't give any more, the bike starts to feel as if its slowing a little, then change gear.
For general riding though I used your tactic, accelerate to 10 change up, to 20 change up, but I always left it a bit later in 4th so I would hit around 50 in 4th then change up so I could do about 60.
By using the rev until it feels like it won't go any more tactic, I saw just under 70, and my instructor who was following me confirmed this and said he'd never seen someone go that fast on a bike like that .
So in short you could be giving it a little more, if your hoping for a bit extra speed just wait a little bit longer in gear, you'll know if you're over doing it because the bike will keep getting louder but you won't be accelerating. ____________________ Past: 55 Sym Jet, 91 ZZR250, 03 NSR125R. Ah right, thanks.
So I'm definitely not over doing it then
Fastest I've gotten is about 62ish mph. |

Right, my bike doesn't have a rev counter so I basically just listen to the engine and change up a gear depending on the speed I'm going.
E.g. When I get to 20 mph I change into second, just before I hit 30 I'll go upto third.
I'll put it in fourth when i get to around forty and put it in fifth when I get near fifty.
Obviously this depends on road surface and incline/decline.
So far I have been fine with this and noticed no problem.
My bf has said I'm not using the bike's full potential but I'm not sure who is right.
Can anyone who has experience with CG's let me know whether I am using to little revs or even going too high.
Thanks. |
What year is your Honda CG125?
Does it have 4 or 5 gears?
If it’s a pre 2004 model, does it have little marks on the speedo saying, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5?
1 would be next to the maximum speed for 1st gear.
2 would be next to the maximum speed for 2nd gear etc.
I looked at a pre 2004 model and noticed the speedo markings
5th = 70mph, 4th = 58mph, 3rd = 45mph
If it’s a 2004 or later model it will not have these marks on the Speedo.
I have worked out the revs based on the speed.
Peak torque (pulling power) is at 7000rpm, Peak power is at 9000rpm.
Rpm mph 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th
3500 8.2 13.2 17.9 21.9 25.7
4000 9.4 15.1 20.4 25.0 29.4
4500 10.6 17.0 23.0 28.1 33.1
5000 11.7 18.9 25.6 31.2 36.8
5500 12.9 20.8 28.1 34.3 40.4
6000 14.1 22.7 30.7 37.5 44.1
6500 15.3 24.5 33.2 40.6 47.8
7000 16.4 26.4 35.8 43.7 51.5
7500 17.6 28.3 38.3 46.8 55.1
8000 18.8 30.2 40.9 50.0 58.8
8500 20.0 32.1 43.4 53.1 62.5
9000 21.1 34.0 46.0 56.2 66.2
9500 22.3 35.9 48.6 59.3 69.9
10000 23.5 37.8 51.1 62.4 73.5
10500 24.7 39.7 53.7 65.6 77.2
11000 25.8 41.5 56.2 68.7 80.9
I managed the trash a 2005 demo bikes engine in 3rd gear and got 55mph out of it = 10762 rpm. But I think that was very unhealthy for the engine (fealt like a rev limiter, but I bet it was the valves bouncing?). I could not thrash it in 4 or 5th = the wind resistance at those speeds were too great.
I would never take my 2005 CG above peak power = 9000 rpm.
I have never needed to go near peak power in 1st or 2nd. I have only needed to go to peak power in 3rd when climbing a very, very steep hill. 4th I normally change up to 5th at around 50mph if strong head wind or hill. 5th = go as fast as I can but stop it going above peak power.
The stronger the head wind / the steeper the up hill, the higher the revs need to be in the gears in order to get up quickly.
If I go up a very, very steep hill in 3rd at peak power = 46 mph the engine feels fine. If I do 46 mph in 3rd gear normally, the engine will vibrate allot and my fingers and feet will suffer terrible vibration sickness, this is bad for me and the engine. |
