I had the enviable task of stripping an RD500 down to the frame, respraying and then re-assembling earlier this year. That was a labour of love, especially as I got to ride it to the MOT as well. Interesting is an understatement, crap brakes, strange handling and a very nice powerband
Cheers

I believe current snowmobile 2 strokes make about 130hp from 600cc; and that’s without a gearbox (direct drive with auto clutch I think).
When it required GP bikes probably rebuilt after a weekend to make 180hp from 500cc, I think it’d probably be more realistic to go for a litre bike with 200-250hp . |

On my list of strokers to own are Simson S50, RD400, DTR200, PE400 (I've had a 175), RD80LC, Kettle and RG500 (would pare it down, though - that hideous fairing would have to go, for starters ). Would also love an RX135, RX King and an older RXZ, but importing stuff from overseas is a pain in the arse. |
Out of those bikes, i would say that you really should get yourself a DT200R. I think it's the best 200cc 2stroke trail bike of all time. It has the same decent enough strong chassis and light weight as the DT125R, but with 30bhp+ and the loads of Midrange thanks to YPVS!
Always wanted an RD80LC as a fun project, as i've heard of people getting 15bhp+ out of them! You will have to pay typically silly money today though for anything Yamaha LC shaped in decent condition, and even a project bike will cost £££'s as you just don't see them about! |
