Something Itchy said in another thread got me thinking. How many of the regulars here have policies without coverage for other vehicles? It's one of the first things I check in a quote, not that I use the feature all that much but it's tremendously useful on occasion and to be honest I hadn't realised it was actually that rare.

I did laugh when the insurance docs for the Reliant came through though, seeing as most companies seem confused by the license structures surrounding them then it covers me TPO for any vehicle I hold the correct license to drive Laughing

This is an important thing for me too, as I do get the chance to ride other bikes. I know Bennetts across the board do not offer this as an option, and it was this that stopped me from taking out a policy with them, even though they were quite a bit cheaper (<£100).

Hi

I have it (Motorcycle Direct), and would not have a policy without it.

I was with Bennets. They lost my business by not having that cover. Wouldn't matter if they were half the price. Similarly Ebike.

All the best

Keith

Another "Motorcycle Direct"er and yes, ditto.
Wouldn't want a policy without it - whilst I've never needed it in anger it's useful to have in the toolkit, as it were.

Insurers in general take my money each year and I've not got anything back directly for it yet, so a little flex in their policies is welcome.

I have it for my car. Will definatley get it included on bike insurance.

Just one pointer, DOV on TPO is usually included on Fully Comp insurance. You are somewhat lucky if you get it on TPFT and TPO.

I had a policy through H&R Insurance which did not include riding other vehicles. I assumed it came with third party cover on all bikes but once the paperwork came through, I found out it didn't.

So after the first month, I didn't bother sending any documents and it cancelled itself. I am with Carole Nash now and it's included. Thumbs Up

Mine's TPFT with Carole Nash and includes it. Wouldn't be without it, as it means mates and I can swap bikes...

Does the other bike you want to ride have to be insured for you to ride it under your "riding other bikes" policy?

Because if not, couldn't you simply get x number of bikes, insure 1 and ride the rest (obviously they would have to be lower cc ect as is most likely stipuled in the policy)?

Strictly speaking depends on the exact wording of the policy, but either way the bike is almost certain to not be insured when you are not riding it. So parking it at the side of the road would be an offence.

All the best

I haven't got a cc size restriction on other bikes I can ride; don't think I ever have...

The wording on the insurance states that the other bike you want to ride cannot be owned by you.

The other bike also has to be insured by the owner for your insurance to be valid to ride it. Thumbs Up

Years ago my dad got pulled driving his sister's car, and when he went to "produce" the cops insisted that he also produce HER insurance for that very reason.

What tarmacsurfer says in his first post is also the case for my car insurance policy - it states I may also drive any other vehicle that I'm licensed for (not owned by me). I guess this must also mean motorcycles.

I was with Westhill insurance a while back and had this cover on TPFT as standard, which was good Thumbs Up I have asked various insurance companies about the need to have the other bike insured and they all basically said no. They never did seem that sure about it though. Laughing

One insurance company actually said that if I left the bike unattended, I could get charged with having no insurance. Though, how they could pin that on me is anybodys guess. Laughing

From what I've gathered over the years most companies include it on all policies insuring a bike of 400cc and over. (meaning I've not got it at the moment) although my car insurance does as it states other "vehicles that I'm licensed to drive" not specificaly cars.

Motorcycle direct have almost matched my bennetts quote online... I've looked through their online policy doc but cant seem to find out, does anyone with motorcycle direct know if riding other bikes is included as "standard"? I'll only forget to ring them and ask tommorow...

Yeah, good luck trying to claim for an accident on a bike on your car insurance I bet. Smile
Given the amount of weaseling they seem to try and do for even legitimate claims I'd be surprised they'd let it slide.

Not sure, but suspect so. Also on the phone they undercut their online quote by about 20% without really being asked.

All the best

have it for the car and for the bike. The funny thing is though that my third party cover for other vehicles bit of the bike policy doesn't cover me for anything under 351CC, which I think is a bit odd. Surely it should be for any bike. I can ride a Triumph rocket but not a CG125? Wink

I don't have any unneccessary "extras" on the bike policy (via Bennetts Embarassed ), just so that I can keep my premium low, and start building my no claims.
I'm down as a named driver on the OH's car policy though
