Right I'm having an argument at work about braking distances.

Can anyone give me facts on whether a Renault Clio would outbrake a new sportsbike (100-0, 70-0 times/distances etc)

cheers Very Happy

Err, dunno much about Clios, but here are some stats for the new FireBlade:

70-0mph:
Time: 2.9s
Dist: 46.4m
Force: 1.10g

According to the highway code, the "typical" stopping distance from 70mph is 96 metres.

I think it would depend a lot on the spec of the clio (ie ABS/fancy brakes & tyres etc.)

A bike also has a lot better 'feel', but a ABS works a lot better in cars than bikes.

I'd say that bikes have a shorter stopping distance, the weight is the most important factor. (this is assuming it has dual front disks single rear..)

In the PB scooby vs bikesn test the scooby did beat the gsxr1 but not by much. and that was a tricked up scooby as well.

chances are that a standard clio wouldnt be able to stop quicker. depends on the rider/driver tho.

Phoenix..
As I'm well aware Confused .... a bike's stopping distance is severly limited by the CoG.... because it is higher than the wheels it means you are limited by keeping the back wheel on the ground.
Dual front brakes aren't allways needed.... the NSR can lift the back easily enough with one, but 2 will stop them heating up so much and give you bettter feel/easier braking etc.

And rear brakes shouldn't come into it.

I think it was superbike magazine that did a braking test which had two cars and four bikes. The four bikes were of different engine sizes and two VFR's but all the bikes out stopped both cars some buy 3-4 meters the furthest was about 10 meters i think im not sure as ive thrown the mag away Confused

The bike has less weight per square inch of brake pad than that of a car, and thus can brake in a shorter distance. however according to the government 1998 driving standards agency there is no difference. When i perform a stoppie i certainly stop quicker than any car Twisted Evil

Hi

Loads of variables. Wet or dry? It is very difficult to beat 1g deceleration in anything. Add to the fun a car has the advantage that locking the wheels just means you take longer to stop. Locking the front wheel of a bike is likely to give you a close up view of the tarmac.

By the way, in good conditions most people who know what they are doing can outbrake ABS. ABS brakes come into their own when you have to stamp on them hard and unexpectedly

All the best

Keith
