Why it's not as if Guinness will disappear from the face of the earth?!

Andy it DOES taste different.

Even if it is all in your head.

I won't touch it here but off that boat and it's a pint of the black stuff for me.

It is in your head, I used to talk to a guinness rep quite regularly when i was a manager at that pub in edgeley, its all the same.

Its the same as when people bring back cans of stella from Lueven (or however you spell it) in Belgium, and say its better. Its the same beer just made in a different building.

If its made in a different place then the water may be different. That could make a huge difference to the taste.
I can drink water at home, but the stuff you get down sarf is rank.

ST JAMES’S GATE

Welcome home. GUINNESS® was first brewed at St. James’s Gate over two centuries ago. Today the Dublin brewery produces GUINNESS® Draught for Ireland, the UK, Europe and the United States. GUINNESS® Essence is also brewed here - it’s a vital ingredient in all the GUINNESS® beer brewed everywhere else, guaranteeing that all our GUINNESS® includes a wee drop from Dublin.

Things taste differant in the South of Ireland than in the North, Its true! You buy Tayto chrisps up here there rotten you go over the border and you buy the Irish ones and you get a nicer bag and they taste nicer, same with their cocoa cola. The English made stuff is differant so i would say guinness is the same.

It's all intended the same, but the way they brew it is differing in the other brewers. They don't all use the exact amount, and the differences in amounts used will affect taste in it's eventuality. Thumbs Up

Location makes a massive difference, im not a massive expert but variations in water, equipment and key ingredients from site to site can make a massive difference.

Carlsberg brewed in copenhagen is far far superior to the crap brewed over here in leeds!

Diageo won't I repeat won't be allowed to close St James Gate, there will be demonstrations before that happens and possible collapse of the brand if they did.

Oh and it DOES taste different where it is brewed, Park Royal Guinness (brewed up until 2005 in London) tasted more bitter than Dublin brew due to the different water used, although they did try their best to emulate it.

If so then that is a recent change, and still means the Guiness gets far more shaken up being ferried around when it gets to the UK.

Although to be honest the main problem with Guiness on the mainland is that people just poor it out and knock the head off it to squeeze the last bit in rather than letting it settle for a decent time.

All the best

Keith

Being shaken will not affect it, hence the dray men lob barrels all over the place.

The gas is added after the barrel is connected to the tab, just before it reaches the fobber then through the lines to our waiting pint pots.

Proper Guiness won't have gas added. And will still have a head. Let it settle and then top up 5 minutes later before handing over and it will taste very different. Rule of thumb, none of the head need be spilled or knocked off.

All the best

proper draught guinnes has two pipes connected to the tap on the barrel, one takes beer away, the other adds gas.

Hence pubs needing gas, the gas is different to that of lagers, but it is still gas, and it is still added at the barrel.

I hate when the head is knocked off. It seems to be a speciality in Birmingham (to knock it off), if not elsewhere.

I like a good bit of froth on top just to chomp off.. its like a preparation for the pint. I can't explain it Laughing

And for the different taste, yeah... Each drink brewed in a different place tastes different. Just like Big Macs I guess.
I had a Big Mac meal in Belgrade (and throughout lots of Europe Very Happy) and it just wasn't the same.

Edit: Guv, you know your Guiness lol! Laughing

Nope, that is just using gas for the pumps rather than a proper pump.

All the best

The little bottles of CO2 YES, not the fooking massive bottles of gas that mix with the drink.

I think it is nitrogen but I may be wrong.
