...and tried to set itself on fire. Shocked

Was in work and someone came over and told me that my bike had fallen over and there was smoke coming out of it. Thought he was taking the piss but sure enough the bike was there, starter motor going mad with smoke everywhere.

Hit the killswitch, didn't do a thing. Tried putting it into neutral then back into gear and that made it stop, got it back on the stand and had to find some water to put the thing out. Brick Wall

No extra damage to the plastics, nothing snapped so nothing to worry about there but now I've got this mess to deal with. Evil or Very Mad

Does anyone know why my bike would do this and what the burnt bits are? I didn't think I could drive it to suicide. Confused

I've disconnected the battery and it's locked away at work so haven't had a chance to see if there's more damage.

It would appear a live wire has come in contact with bare metal causing a direct short, melting wires and small fire.
Possibly this somehow activated the starter causing it to lurch forward off the stand?

Maybe someone knocked it over and the bang started the electrical problem.

Anyway it looks worse than it is, a few pounds spent on some electrical bits and 2 or 3 hours work by someone with knowhow.

Your lucky the fire didn't take the whole thing really.
In theory a fuse should have blown before things got serious.
Have you or a previous owner been meddling?
- extra items for example?

I think it could be the Starter Solenoid.

Could've stuck on or was damaged when the bike ''fell over'' and caused the starter to run.

looks like flasher relay

but the short seems to be around ye fuse box

just strip it all back and see how far the melted wires go and replace them

some basic electrical wiring knowlegde should be all you need if in doubt ask someone

if the main fuse aint gone pop it may be the short is of direct feed of battery or some dodgey wiring or tinfoil been used to replace a fuse

hope yu get it sorted

Thumbs Up

Hi

Thats the starter relay (the 2 main contacts have come off, they are hanging from the wires).

The starter relay normally works by earthing through the starter motor switch (eventually). If that wire to the switch had snapped / worn and earthed out then the relay would trigger and the starter motor would run.

Run the starter for long enough and it might well melt the relay. But I would expect it to kill the battery first.

All the best

Keith

It tried to start itself which knocked it over.

I noticed a problem with my starter a couple of weeks ago where I'd hit the button and hear a click but nothing would happen. Needed to hit it a couple of times quickly to make it go.

The flasher unit is a different thing, not in the picture.

I havent touched the wiring by the way. Razz

Dont think I'll get the bike home until tomorrow so stripping it will have to wait. Thanks for the help. Thumbs Up
