Got a pair of proper bike boots today but it seems harder now to change gear(going up). Its like less sensitive on the toe compared to the soft leather boots i had before so you cant really feel the gear changer moving. Does it just take a while for the boots to get worn in or what?
Regards,

May i ask which boots you bought? I am buying some boots and need some opinions on good ones. I don't want to spend more than £150 though.

regards

It can take a while, especially if you're not used to boots (like I was), but yeah, it may just require some "breaking-in".

Crestfallen: I can personally recommend the Sidi Vertebra (2) boots, which you can probably find for around £130-£149.

I have the same problem- I just got some boots on sunday and the first time I wore them I kept missing gears. I think its cos with my old safety boots I changed gear by lifting my toes whereas with these boots I have to pull up with my whole foot. I'm hoping they will soften over time so I can get more movement out of them.

I got some of these Oxstar TCS boots from the BikeWise show in Durham

RRP is £149.99 but I got them for £60!

I got Swift "Tourismo" boots with shin/ankle/toe protection and 100% waterproof. They were €175 about STG£120 so not bad for the money.

Keen,
Think its the same with me. Im used to just moving my toes so moving my whole foot feels uncomfortable. Keep missing gears too. Suppose once the soles start to bend a little itll get easier.

Bike boots are usually specifically made with a harder bit for the gear lever. It will soften up a bit and you'll get used to it.
My foot used to start to hurt where the gear leaver was, wearing Hi-tech Magnum (leather) boots from an hours riding a day... So it's better to have something a bit stuffer.

I love mine, Alpinestars SMX which wer around £145, they're really comfy (even if they do STILL squeak) and when they are broken in they're pretty sensitive to change gear in too.

You'll find once you've had a decent pair of boots you won't be able to ride in anything else.

I know but I ran out cos I used it to polish my car with (don't ask) and I've got to gather enough motivation together to actually go to a shop and purchase some.

heheheh, my boots were squeaking so much when I took my test the examiner thought I had a radio on me and insisted on patting me down to make sure i wasn't cheating!!! Laughing

I went for the cheaper option. Some Diadora thingies. They got enough protection for me and were only £75. They look like race/road boots and have the same features as half the more expensive boots.

You shouldn't be pullin up with your foot at all. Your toes should be all you need to change gear. I know from riding without the boots that you may need to change the position of your gear slector lever. Mine altered loads when I got the boots as they support your ankle and give more of an L shape to your ankle/foot.
