for chains....
big long article on here somewhere

basically, toothbrush, copious amounts of wd-40, about 30 mins to spare.
Do back sprocket too and if you want to be proper about it take front sprocket cover off and do that.

Make sure to do visible bit of sprocket, then length of chain, then sprocket, then chain, etc. or you'll just be making your clean bits dirty again

Use disk brake cleaner, or alcohol of some variety.

EDIT : for chains... I've used a combination of WD40, Gunk Degreaser and/or Motul Chain Cleaner in the past (one at a time to compare the results). And IMO the specialist degreasers did a much quicker and more effective job than the WD40...
but then I'm lazy when it comes to cleaning the bike cos I'd rather be out riding Thumbs Up Mr. Green

Naaaaaaa...... Shocked

Don't use an oil based solvent on brakes.
The pads can absorb the solvent and this will reduce their effect.

There are dedicated compounds out there just for that purpose.
They even make it easy for us bikers by writing, 'Brake Cleaner' on the tin. Embarassed Laughing

Chain and sprocket.
No short cut bastad job.
I have asked several times but my girlfriend refuses to assist in this.

Parrafin white spirit will degrease but you have seals in the chain that could suffer.

Again there are specific can and bottles of stuff to do this.

You been in Halfrauds yet?

Makes you go faster, less friction you see.

I just use paraffin on the chain and brake cleaner on the brakes.

In the absence of dedicated degreaser, I sometimes use WD40 etc for cleaning the chain (and sprockets etc)

Apologies if there's any misunderstanding

Get yourself a cheap electric toothbrush from a pound shop.
& use it with paraffin on your chain.
