Just wondered what peple on here make of the current Jihad against Salman Rushdie ?
Apparently all good muslims should make it there duty to try and kill him if possible.....
I thought this might make a good side topic of discussion to go alongside the " Bernard Manning is a fat racist " Topic.
Which is worse ? Telling a few racist jokes or calling for a holy war against someone ?

What interests me is that I believe he is still under a significant amount of police protection - he certainly has been in the recent past. Bearing in mind that the entire country is now the subject of numerous fatwas from our excitable friends in the Middle East, I assume each and every one of us can expect similar assistance?

Well if Rushdie was dead his ugly, and boy is he ugly, mug would no longer be in the media, the tax-payer would be better off, the police could get back to their day jobs, a few fundies would perhaps have their appetite sated, and maybe his drivel would go out of print.

But the thing that irks me is the KBE why...? Eh?

His knighthood is ill-advised at best. At worst it's a two fingers salute to the millions of fundamentalists who want him dead. Seems like a mistake to stir up the hatred for him again.

Except he's pretty much in hiding, so what'll actually happen is that a Marks And Spencer's in London will get bombed and a dozen people who don't understand (or care) what all the fuss is about will be killed.

I think we should stand up to these fundamentalists. I haven't bombed anywhere because I didn't agree with something. There is another link that shows a woman putting these bigots in their place and showing what these fundamentalists really are. Warmongering Dictators. This is the 21st Century. These Dictators still live in the first and second centuries.

I agree completely, but there's a difference between standing up to someone and rubbing their noses in it. I mean, fatwa aside, does he really deserve a Knighthood for a couple of books?

I don't know why he was given a knighthood, but now that he has, its not so much a matter of whether he merits it, but of the right to express what you want to.

How can muslim's in Pakistan threaten us for what is a domestic issue, let alone try and dictate to us what we can and can't do.
And the danger it brings... I know I'd rather stick up for myself than pander to the requests of narrow minded individuals.

Are they so insecure about their faith that anybody going against their views needs to be killed? Blasphemy is something to disagree about, not to murder for!
