"We all know (or should know!) you should never remove a rider's helmet at the scene of a crash. Modern quality helmets are so snug fitting and so well made that they offer superb protection during the crash - but can be a nightmare to take off afterwards.

Damage to the cervical spine is a real and serious danger if a helmet is not removed correctly, and the removal should only be attempted by rescuers properly trained in upper spine immobilisation techniques.

To assist these qualified recuers we have HATS OFF the emergency helmet removal system that can be fitted to almost any helmet.

I recently did a course in emergency aid for motorcyclists. Would recommend anyone to do this course. Removing an helmet from an injured person isn't that hard it's just risky but if they ain't breathing they'll be dead soon anyway.

These things are only useful to paramedics who have the pressure pump to fit them.

Very idea good for track/race events, could even make them a requirement.

Bollocks.

Got one here, complete with hand pump (bulb style).

I would not recommend getting one without doing the appropriate course though.

There are times to leave helmets on and times to remove them.

The Hats-Off system helps to remove a helmet. The training make certain you know when to remove it and when not to.

I heard an interesting tip a while back. If you wear a thin balaclava under your crash helmet, a paramedic can easily remove a crash helmet by cutting the balaclava along the chin section. Then, by pulling the two chin pieces apart, the helmet slides of easily, putting no pressure on the neck. Seems quite a sensible idea to me!!

Keeps the lining of you lid clean too!! Thumbs Up

No it's not bollocks mate, whats the likely hood of you carry one when it's needed. If you crash you can hardly do it to yourself or expect a bystander to have one. A paramedic WILL have one.
