Did a top and rebuild on RS125, and there's black engine oil in the barrell, that's not meant to be there is it? I'm guessing this would be caused by a piston ring, bottom one perhaps? I've probably answered by own question, but I could well be wrong...

Hi

Shouldn't really be much oil there. Traces yes, but not a puddle. However are you sure it is oil rather than just a bit of oil floating on some water that has got in when you have disassembled the engine.

Being a 2 stroke there is no need for the rings to do any real sealing of the top end from oil. Unlike a 4 stroke the bottom end is not filled with oil (gearbox is), and is just lubed with the same oil that is in the fuel air mix that goes into the top end.

All the best

Keith

Take your gearbox oil filler bung out and have a sniff. If it smells of petrol the clutch side crank seal has gone.

No signs of petrol in there at all.

Yes, that's quite possible, I put 2 stroke oil along the walls of the barrell when I refitted the barrell, but what I put in was clear/red and the oil was deep black. I suppose it could have come from carbon deposits in the exhaust port mixing with 2 stroke, but I decoked everything else. Cheers Smile
