Ok, so to set the scene... I'm on an XR125 with my CBT and planning at some point to upgrade to a restricted licence which will mean I can get rid of the L plates. I only use the bike for commuting and although I would love to get out in the countryside at some point I rarely get round to it.
There is a woman at work who is into biking with her husband in a big way, they're members of biking organisations, actively into biking meets etc and very friendly and helpful and gives me lots of pointers to getting lessons/tested etc leading to a proper licence. She rides a rather nice looking Fazer 600.

This morning I get into work and she pulls in besides me and says for me to have a go on her bike so I can tell the difference with a bigger bike. I politely decline as it's raining quite heavily and she suggests I have a go when it's dry on another day.

The thing is, we work on an industrial estate that has a few quiet roads with several roundabouts. The police frequently pass through as it is a shortcut between main ring roads and a nearby motorway. If I took a ride on her bike it'd just be around the industrial estate but obviously I'd be riding illegally... I don't want to just turn her down as she has been really helpful and it would be a really good experience - so what do I do? Question

It depends how much you care about the law.

Providing you're sensible, there shouldn't be any reason for you to get done - do make sure you do it at a quiet time and take extra care to avoid other traffic etc.

You will be riding without licence or insurance, but then they're just bits of paper that don't really /mean/ much in the real world.

See this is the thing, written down or on paper it's a ridiculous thing to even contemplate doing. I generally abide the law whenever I can and don't condone riding without proper cover, but then I say this thinking about town riding or long journeys, when it's busy etc, not spending 5 mins on back roads or private roads. I guess it's a peer pressure thing too coz I don't want her thinking I'm not serious about taking my test...

I wouldn't, purely because it's someone else's bike. You drop it, you pay for it. Penny Coin Penny Coin

The other thing to think of is... are the roads in the estate adopted?? If so you're riding illegally, if not, ie. they are maintained by the occupiers of the estate through some sort of service charge they are private and you could ride around them all day if you wanted to!
