Bandanas and such like

hi all, I was thinking of getting a bandana or something similar to wear under my helmet, for a couple of reasons, one to stop my greasy hair spoiling my helmet lining and second to hide my helmet hair when I've taken my helmet off. Anyway, anybody have any recommendations on what to get?

I'm a bit worried, that they might be too thick or something which would cause the helmet to be really tight on my head, and also if they're thick may cause me to sweat more as the air coming through the vents would never reach my head properly. So I'm looking for something fairly thin, is breathable, and can fit under a helmet ok.

I've had a look on ebay and there's something called a du-rag which looked perfect, thin, mesh fabric, etc, but then saw that you have to tie it on all the way round the head which would probably cause a problem with getting the helmet on.

any recommendations much appreciated

Personally I wear a buff under my helmet, it serves several purposes:
- keeps my hair out of my eyes
- keeps my hair tucked up and prevents it getting knotty
- keeps my neck and chin warm
- in the summer dulls the pain of exploding flies on my neck

You get get lightweight summer buffs as well as thicker ones and ones with fleecey bits too

You could try one of them Clalabava things. I have one, but it ends up trying to cut my head in half when the chin parts creeps into my gub.

A bandana is not thick enough to cause any major discomfort in the helmet dept.
But the bloody knot can be a pain.
(Unless you wear the knot Hilda Ogden Style on your brow. )
I have a tammy I got free with a bike mag. (Tight fisted jock you see)
Stick that up your Jook/in a pocket whilst riding your bike then when you want to wander about on foot you whip your hat off and 'deftly' slip into the tammy.
Decorum intact.

Or be a troo biker and not care about hair.

i personally use and oxford silk balacava and when it goes in the wash i use my Hein Gierike silk balacava.

I find that the balacava that are not silk iritate my skin

Get one - comfy and dead useful. I'm tempted to but a second one so I can swap 'em out for washing more frequently. Hair grease. Urgh.

Oxford do a coolmax balaclava for £9.99 its so thin that its almost see-through and the coolmax material wicks the sweat away from you, keep both your head and helmet nice and moisture free.

Wearing a balaclava also seems to reduce the effect of "helmet hair" as well.
