PostPosted: 23:35 - 15 May 2007    Post subject: Becoming a courier Reply with quote

Hi all,

First post here, been browsing for a while though. Would appreciate the advice of any couriers here.

Basically I'm between jobs at the moment and strongly considering becoming a courier. I'm sick of the rat race (hell, I'm only 21, but office work just ain't for me)...only problem is I don't have a lot of money behind me.
I have an interview with one of the bigger courier companies tomorrow...realistically the only way I can get started is to hire a bike...about £385 a month all-inclusive plus £200 deposit, and I'd have to pay by credit card as I'm that lacking in funds right now.
I really can't face the thought of donning the suit and tie again right now though...so I'm thinking it's gotta be worth it even if it's a struggle initially.
Really I want to know which companies I should be looking at for the best deal - who would be willing to pay my bike hire for me and take it out of my wages for example, and who I'm most likely to earn money quickly with. Guarantees would take a load off my mind as would the option to work 7 days a week when I need to at the start.
I've been riding on CBT for a couple of weeks (done about 1000 miles though) and have my test on Friday, so as far as I know I'm not eligible for any company bike hire schemes.
The bike I've got sitting outside is a Fazer, and courier insurance would cost... £4.5k... Laughing ... so that option is out.
I'm not afraid of hard work...I've just come out of an environment where I was working 10-12 hour days under constant pressure and usually no break. I just need to know that I'm going to be ok financially and not set myself up for disaster, and I'd really rather avoid putting bike hire on credit card if I can.

Any advice much appreciated. I really want to make this work.

Try spending a bit of time sitting around amongst the couriers outside Costa Coffee in Great Marlborough Street, in the West End of London.

That'll give you some idea of what couriering is like Thumbs Up Mr. Green

I know it's not all fun and games, but I'd much rather deal with traffic and directions than clients, targets and being trapped at a desk all day long. Smile
Always wanted to be a fighter pilot, but I've got a chronic medical condition which rules me out of the military completely. I've tried the business world and it really doesn't do much for me. I can't find a closer job to my ideal that I am legally allowed to do (well, I'd rather be an international motorcycle tour guide, but that's not exactly an easy-entry career option Wink ) - plus I love riding.

ride for a year first imho dude - but if it's yer dream go for it. Personally I reckon most firms won't touch you due to inexperience. I wait to be proved wrong.

I'm serious.
They're a little mad, but for the most part a nice bunch of guys ... some of them are very good mates of mine

Just plot up with a bunch of couriers for a bit, hang around, see what the pro's and cons are, and then make a decision.
Thumbs Up

Well plenty of firms seem more than happy to employ me...it's always the issue of start-up costs that gets in the way.
It's only firms like ecourier who everyone and their dog wants to work for that have turned me away.

Almost certainly.

Hang around for long enough and some are bound to turn up for a fag, a coffee and a moan

Does it pay well enough initially to cover costs and make enough money to live off and cover outgoings of about £400 a month?

I think I have some Scottish blood...does that put me at a disadvantage? Neutral

I'm not sure if it goes against some "courier code" or something to mention the company name over the internet, but I'm going to meet CourierSys tomorrow. They seem pretty reputable? Lots of distance work too, I'll be on a 125 to start with (firstly because if I don't pass my test on Friday, I'll still be on a CBT, and also because I can't afford to hire a CB500) but looking forward distance work definitely appeals to me more.
Do you think I could earn at least £300 a week from my very first week? I'm willing to work seven days if I need to, I just need to make my repayments and not get caught up in debt.
I've lived in London (zone 5) all my life but I'm not going to pretend I know the place inside out...I've only been on the road a few weeks.
You reckon they or any other company would hire a bike from Hexagon for me and take it out of my wages (seeing as I can't get company bikes due to my experience)?

Maybe I could negotiate cheaper insurance during the winter months? Very Happy

Madness...I get the impression just from the kinds of discussions I've had with people that courier insurance used to be a lot cheaper.

It was a Blackadder moment.

"Let's all join the 20 minuters, we can do 20 minutes of work and then go home!" Laughing

Modern-day equivalent would probably be a Labour cabinet minister.

Only 4 companies worth working for. In no particular order City Sprint, Lewis Day, Addison Lee, Reuter Brookes.

If you have time to drink coffee you're crap and should change jobs.

If you only earn £350 a week for 5 days the same applies.

I haven't worked for 4.5 months and did a £122 day today.

Spoken to City Sprint and Lewis Day - they're only looking for experienced people at the moment. Need to be 25 to work for Addison Lee...not heard of Reuter Brookes and I can't find them on the internet for some reason.

You think I should be able to earn £350 a week straight off the bat with 2 weeks' riding experience and limited knowledge of the London road network (that I am obviously willing to improve)?

Sounds like a nice little route.
I'd much prefer that kind of work than ferrying things between the West End and the City all day.
From what I've been told so far, at Courier Systems if I'm on a 125 then I'm limited to work within the M25. Makes sense really, it only took me a couple of days of riding to realise that 125s are gutless and a real chore outside of town. Don't get me wrong, Aylesbury and back was really fun, but the engine sounded like it was going to explode all the way and half the time I still couldn't hit the speed limit. Laughing
Still, gives me something to aim for. I'd better sleep now - I'll let you know how I get on tomorrow. Thumbs Up

281 miles is a little route?

Most Courier people ive come across are just pratts IMO. Squeezing into tiny gaps, even cutting me up. Some close calls.
I wouldnt mind being a courier - But im 23 1 yrs riding and my insurance quote was 5k

I agree with this. If your thinking of rushing around on a bigger bike right away it could be dangerous.
Ive only had my 600 since Feb, and im 'just' about getting used to the handling & what it can do Thumbs Up

I've been on my 600 since Feb and still not used to top end rush.

Another thing is that everyone wants to become a courier this time of year, because it's nice and sunny. Can you imagine yourself still enjoying it in december when it's 0 degrees and there's ice on the road. Just a thought.
