Right.
i've been saving for a bike for ages, i've loved bikes since i was 3. I have been saving for my whole life and have 6 grand budget. When im 16 hopefully i should get a job and add a grand on to that by the time im able to take the test.
I wont need to pay for lessons as we've been collecting tesco points which cover everything through to passing the test.
My plan is to get a Honda CBR600F and get a restrictor for the first 2 years that it has to be 33BHP. Then remove it when the two years is up and ride like hell.
Is this a sensible plan? and is it at fault in any way?
keen to hear your opinion
thanks in advance! |

You can use Tesco points to do your test ? :O
And hmm, if your really eager a 50cc at 16 would be a good plan, to give you a year on the road, and if you buy second hand 50 and get a reasonable deal you'll only really have to pay for the insurance. Plus you can get to your job on it ____________________ Bandit 600 |

Don't worry about looks too much, and you'll be fine.
You can pick up 50cc's, especially scooters for cheap, insurance isn't to expensive either. I had a friend who got his scooter for 500 and insurance was 300. Which is not bad I think.
Ride for a year, do your test, and upgrade, if you have £6000 saved up, you can easily afford the test and training . Just make sure you book it in advance so its all as close to your birthday as you can. ____________________ Past: 55 Sym Jet, 91 ZZR250, 03 NSR125R. Present: 97 ER-5.

As Ncrn said, you can probably get on the road with £800 and you'll get £500 (give or take) of that back when you sell the bike on. Of course you'll need a helmet and the rest of the gear but you'll use them long after you get rid of the 50.
Don't worry about looking a twat, its not a big deal and your friends will secretly be dead jelous even if they prentend they hate the thing. I always rode my 50 with a big grin, and it was worth every second for the road experiance. At least when I came to my 125 I'd already gotten past the whole "Oh my god I'm on the road!" stage and could concentrate on handling the bike itself.
It'll be A LOT less daunting if you had a 50 first, and the jump from a 50 to a 600 is less than nothing to a 600! And like I said, it'll get you too and from that job your gonna get
Edit: Are you after a brand new CBR by the way? ____________________ Bandit 600 |

Ncarey ,
That scooter you were looking at is a twist and go thing, which is not going to teach you anything about gears . |

| matt_uk wrote: | i would luike to see the insurance for a cbr when your 17, esepcially if your planning to spend 6 grand on it. |
I doubt he'd pay 6 grand on the bike itself. When I was doing random quotes for a CBR600F from years '95 to '99 I did quotes with 1 years NCB and 18 and the insurance for TPF&T was just shy of 2 grand.
Definately try and get a geared 50cc for when you turn 16. Once you're 17 book your theory and start deciding times for practical lessons etc.
Once you have passed the A2 and have the CBR600F restricted you'll be fine a slong as you have common sense. I moved up from a 125cc Chinese piece of shit to a 600cc. Loads of my friends and family said "OMFG your going to die you fucking idiot"
Most of my friends have had accidents were it's their fault. (In a car) Misjudging corners, driving beyond the conditions, driving like nobs. They've mainly been driving for like 6 months or so. I've been riding bikes since Dec '05 (not a long time but more than my friends) and I've only had 1 accident and it was when 2 cars pulled out on me.
HUGE kudos for saving up so much. You'll definately deserve it when you do get the CBR. And you shouldn't care if you'll look like an "idiot" because you'll be able to get around unlike your friends AND just think of all the car drivers you'll filter past and THEY will be looking like idiots. And definately get some good gear, don't get cheap stuff especially since you can afford it.
Good luck with the future and getting onto bikes.
You'll be fine progressing from a 50cc to a 600cc. Just one thing you have to realise is the difference in power delivery, weight. handling, stability and brakes and probably more from the 50cc moped to the 600cc sports tourer. ____________________ '99 Hornet 600 , VFR 400 NC30 '92 , Kasawamasaki GT 550 , '98 Hornet 600

As said above, look at getting a decent 2nd hand geared bike for a year. Scooters are good and easy, but they are weighted differently and a geared bike will set you up much better for a 'big' bike as you are going up in weight and power rather than getting used to gears and different position etc.
I had a Kawasaki AR50 when I was 16 and I learn't a fair amount on that. Got an R6 now and at first it feels daunting, but you soon get used to it.
I would go online to an insurance company like Bennetts and you can get quotes for different bikes without hassling a sales person, so you can get an idea. But restricted big bikes can be just as much as the full power version, so check first. I got an R6 more or less based on the insurance quotes. For some reason it was £600 cheaper than the other sports 600s like CBR600RR, Ninja ZX6R etc.
Nowadays young drivers tend to pay most of their budget on insurance!!!
PS. that scooter you pointed out is a Chinese import and I have one in the garage for a friend. Its only done 131miles and 18months old, but the exhaust is totally rusty, the handlebars had come loose and it was just one bolt holding them on, the throttle was broke and went both ways. Fixed all those bits, but it won't run, it keeps cutting out after a few minutes of running. So be weary, the Chinese are flooding the market with 'copies' which are cheap in price and quality.
How about this; https://atsearch.autotrader.co.uk/www/bikes_search.jsp?searchform=&modelexact=1&lid=search_used_bikes_full&photo=1&state=%27%27&sort=&make=YAMAHA&min_pr=75&source=0&model=ANY&max_pr=&ccappr=50&agerange=&miles=40&keywords=geared&mileage=&postcode=m34+5pj&ukcarsearch_full.x=62&ukcarsearch_full.y=7
Dearer yes, but you shouldn't loose that much on it when you chop it in, you're just paying more but not loosing more, plus it looks like a proper bike. ____________________ Yamaha R6 '05 model, upside down forks, radial brakes, Blue flame can, dubble bubble and clear turn signals - as they say in America |

So? I rode a twist and go for 8 months, then jumped on a 125cc geared bike, I had no other training than my dad explaining to me how the clutch works, and when I kick it up I go up a gear, when I kick it down I go down a gear.
I picked it up in a couple of weeks |
I think it's easier to learn to use the clutch and gears on a 125cc than a 600cc sports bike(even if it's restricted). If you do too much throttle and dump the clutch on the 125 you will be fine. Might have a slight jump but nothing big. Whereas with the 600cc it'll do quite a bit more.
Better to learn now than later anyways. ____________________ '99 Hornet 600 , VFR 400 NC30 '92 , Kasawamasaki GT 550 , '98 Hornet 600

Try and find a geared 50cc as said above - I've found an RS50 in good condition for £600 or so - insurance £300, gear (inc locks) £200 - remember you will use the gear when you get the bigger bike.
[off topic sorta] Whatca all reckon the insurance would be like on a Bandit 600 at 17

So i think ill do my CBT and get the TZR50 or something like it
play around on that for a year.
but that means i cant get a brand new CBR600F without saving close to 2 and a half grand, not including what ill need for insurance!
So would you recommend getting a 2nd hand one? i dont wanna buy a quality bike if its just not going to be quality anyway due to wear and tear |
I wouldn't buy a brand new bike if I were you.
2 reasons
1) You'll lose a lot of money when you come to sell it and the insurance will be very high.
2) you'll have to run it in which gets frustrating.

All the same he has to learn to use a 125cc to do his test, so I guess he'll learn clutch control or he'll fail Wink |
True, but one years experience with clutch and gears will be a lot more helpful than probably a 3 day course and then the test day. ____________________ '99 Hornet 600 , VFR 400 NC30 '92 , Kasawamasaki GT 550 , '98 Hornet 600
