Lovely!
But if you're heading to Italy, don't stop there!
Try lake Como and lake Garda.
And the most famous strip of motorway to the west coast all the way from the south of france to tuscany.
I've been down there many times and it is the twistiest, prettiest thing ever to be laid by man. ____________________ Kawasaki ER6n -> Honda CBR600RR -> Honda VTR 1000 -> Moto Guzzi Norge 1200

Great view in that first photo! I love roads like that, especially if you don't know if they actually lead anywhere.
Looking at the map, at the southern end of that road it kind of spits into three, and the bit going to the west heads down south for about 15miles without a single village being marked on the map or any other roads branching off - Did you do that part, or take one of the other routes? I'd like to ride that road, I bet it feels really lonely out there
This one of the many reasons why I think sidecars are the way forward for "adventure" motorcycling. On roads like that you have the constant risk of dropping/sliding your bike on a poor surface, and not being able to carry enough supplies to survive out in the middle of nowhere if you were stranded.
One more thing, what maps do people use to find roads like this? The AA/Michelin Europe Atlases aren't anywhere near detailed enough. Individual paper Michelin maps are probably a bit too detailed (and therefore confusing/cluttered), and you need to carry loads of them and mess around swapping maps. I got myself into loads of trouble trying to ride tiny roads like that in various different countries last year, where the roads I found weren't marked on my AA Atlas, or the roads on the Atlas didn't seem to exist in real life. ____________________ Hard livin', hard luck. |

I came from Chambons up to Meanna de Suza. The gravel was big and sharp and hence a big problem as I was on a fazer, i.e. road tires, and I was worried about another puncture. It then turned into a mud track which was ok in the dry. There were a couple of cross bikes going over, which would be a good way to do it. Other than that, just me and the cows.
The 2 branches I didn't go down you could see from on high, they were tracks too. Farm tracks.
The forts were well worth seeing though, as you say very isolated and lovely. I found the road on google maps, I literally did it because the north part was so windy and I got it stuck in my head to do it! Its marked on michelin local map 333 too. It's not the only time I got stuck on a gravel track mind...

which I'll reorganise soon a bit better I think, so general link to all my pics: https://www.facebook.com/photos.php?id=561866496
I didn't do any touring in Italy really, it was so hot and busy I just wanted to get out of there as quick as possible back to the French Alps. Did it through the night in one go. Sounds like I missed out - next time though! |

I would have thought you'd be able to get to the facebook pictures from the last link https://www.facebook.com/photos.php?id=561866496, even if you aren't registered - is this not the case?

Ta for the compliment re the photos Some days I averaged about 30mph due to stopping every 5 minutes for photos
I'm in the process of adding a travelogue type thingy with the notes on the pictures, theres at least a location on most at the moment. I'll put the rest on this week. Top level:
Best road to ride: Last bit of Portalier to Gex, near Geneve. And the SS025 down into Italy from Mont Cenis, although the road surface isn't as good as it looks.
Most Scenic route: Gorge Du Daluis, between the N85 and Col Du Mont Centis.
Most windy road: Meana De Susa of course
I loved Col D'Iseran too, great place. I think this was the best bit overall.
It's almost all in France. I love France. |
