howdy doody everyone
Ive been offered this bike in august when the tax/mot runs out, engine has been ran without oil and its a wee bit rattly now. Been told its the cam chain, but fancy rebuilding the lump as part of the project anyway, been told its £250 if it still runs, £150 if the engines died.

Anyhow ive got plenty of questions so decided to contain them to this post lol. First off... insurance... ive been quoted £526 TPO which to me seems ace, that was with 1 years no claims on my ped though, does that count? seems a bit too good to be true though considering an rs125 would cost the sameish?
Passing my test. Would it be a good idea to approach the bike training place i did my cbt at, and start practicing on a 50cc geared bike whilst i'm 16, then move onto a 125 when im 17? how many lessons on average would it take to get to test worthy standard?
The engine. Ive rebuilt 4 stroke single honda engines and heaps of 2 strokes, obviously an IL4 is going to be more complicated but i feel upto the challenge lol, can you get hayes manuals specific for these bikes? are there many specialist tools id need for removing/tightening bits and bobs?
The looks. erm its not exactly the prettiest of things lol, ive found this guide to modify r6 fairings onto an fz400, are the 400/600 similar? https://www.madsi.co.uk/fairing.aspx , if i could find some mashed up r6 fairings im fairly good with fibreglass so seems like a good idea lol. Are their any good ready made aftermarket fairing providers? ive had a scout around and could only find one which was a bit ugly lol
This is all based on if i get my apprenticeship but i thought id do some research now, would apprechiate any help/advice
cheers all

If its been run without oil (as opposed to low on oil) you may well be looking at a crankshaft regrind, new bottom end bearings, (possibly con rods as well), new pistons, rings and a rebore, likely a head and cams. Depends on how long it was run and how heavily it was loaded, but no oil means really fast wear on the above components, and possibly gearbox damage as well, but its less of a risk.
If you rebuild it its going to cost a fair bit, absolute minimum of £500 on engine parts if you do all the work yourself, however, you will have a pretty good idea how the inside of a bike engine works by the time you're done.
Alternatively, a motor from the breakers would be cheaper, but you wont know what state its in.
I would tell him £150 either way given the likelyhood that the lump has significant damage. ____________________ Trust me, I`m an engineer
