bikewise that is...

basically i'm not sure whether to get a 125 or try and pass my test and get somthing bigger. I'll have to wait at least a year to get the money (by then I'll be 18).
I would get a cheap 125 to learn on however i can't sell my ped and would rather not leave it to rot in the back of the garage (it's going to my brother when he's old enough)

anyway i'm interested in what routes everyone else took (or are busy taking)

Get ur rents to buy ur ped.
I went for NSR for 10 months then RF400 when I passed.
I wish I'd had the money for a 600 as they make more financial sense in the long run

Hi

Get a cheap bigger bike and learn to ride that and then pass your test. If you cannot afford a sports 125 then look at something cheaper, like an H100 or RXS100 (both likely to be dirt cheap as you cannot do your bike test on them, on the lightweight motorcycle test). H100 will do about 60, RXS about 70 (real speeds).

All the best

Keith

my bro just got an rxs100 while his NSR is off the road and he loves it - says it has decent guts and although it looks poo, he only paid £400 on an L plate and he's about to sell it for £500!

Thanks for the advice...I think i might try and get a cheap 125 to learn on however i have limited funds and would prefer to have a bigger bike before i go off to university next year.

Would it be possible to save money by not insuring/tax/etc the cheap bike and try to learn on private roads? What would I have to do for legal reasons?

If you don't tax a bike (or car) you have to fill in a SORN declaration (Statutory Off Road Notification?) otherwise they will fine you. I think thats it?

That's right Keen! Get cought on public roads and go to court. Simple. The law states that the drive wheel(s) of any road vehicle not taxed must not come into contact with the road surface. What a load of Bol*£cks, I know. Basically, get a trailer if you need to transport it to private land or get a mate to lift the rear of the bike while you push. YEAH RIGHT!!!

15 quid to insure it (dont you mean tax) or is there a cheap method of insuring it...i dont mind a 15 tax but tpo insurence is still a few hundered (i'd like to save as much money as possible for a 400). Is tpo the minimum insurence required or is there something cheaper still?

btw...b4 i make up my mind to get a cheap 125, how much approx would it cost to get a 400 (say a VFR400) and insure it (i'll be 18, 1 NCB)

nah, you can ride any CC bike with a restricted license, but it just has to be restricted to 33bhp Rolling Eyes

Once you've had your restricted license for 2 years, you can ride any bike. Alternatively, if you reach 21 before your 2 years is up, then you can do another test (accelerated access), and then ride any bike. If you're already over 21, then you can do Direct Access, which will allow you to ride any bike straight away...
