Kymco KR125 - sharing Barend replacement info.

I've been looking to replace my barends due to scratching the right one - I catch it on the gatepost when backing the bike out in the morning, so I bought some universal ones to replace the stock ones. Unfortunately upon removal I discovered that the Kymco weights are installed differently / have a different bolt width (looks like a m6 bolt) and wasn't going to be the five minute job I thought.

I did a search and didn't find any info relating specifically to the Kymco, but found a fab link to remove another set of weights - on a CBR, so I thought I would pass on what I discovered today.

The KR125 weight assembly within the handlebars is like (read almost exactly the same) as the Honda CBR configuration. This means that there is a metal clip around the metal core which the barend screws into and it needs some additional work to remove.

I did some googling and the link here is how to remove the CBR weight and core. It is the same procedure on the Kymco, only that the holes to push the clips out align front to back rather than up and down.

The example shows the left handside, which is very easy, and relatively quick.

To complete the right hand side on the Kymco, the process is very similar, however, to disconnect the throttle tube from the throttle cable you need to unscrew the switch housing, then rotate the throttle tube forward, you can then ease the cable end from the throttle tube fitting.

Once the tube is off, you can get to the holes to release the metal clip, and once the weight is out, you can pop the throttle tube and switch back on, followed by your new weight.

If you want to keep the existing inner core, it is likely that any aftermarket CBR weights will fit fine - the only difference I can see between the Kymco and the Honda OEM weight is the notch in the weight which stops the core spinning when turning the screw is larger on the Kymco weight.

If I feel the bars vibrate too much, I might well go back to the OEM but with CBR aftermarket ends. (There is much more choice of these than the universal types.)

Finally, if you want a tank protector for the KR, I found the Ikle Ronnie to be a perfect fit - never realised how close I was to the tank when riding until seeing the scuffs on the paint.
