hello guys im new here

i just need some advice on a afew things...

up til now iv been riding scooters iv had 17 in total ranging from gilera runner 172's to pug speedfight 50's iv done it all, my speed fights water pump went on me the other day so im now looking to get something tough for a change?

im looking for a geared, 4 stroke prefered, 125 crosser like the following:

https://www.ccwn.org/Ludwig.Geromiller/bilder/mot/DR_ABEND.jpg

i need one that can pull alot of miles off as i do around 60 mile trips every weekend (hence why my 50's die alot) so i don't want anything that will need rebuilds every other week as a result (hence the 4 stroke) id also prefer a good named brand like kawasaki, honda etc, no chinese crap

now im lacking the info on crosser makes etc so can anyone tell me what i could get for around... 400 - 700 quid any recomendations etc?

obiously id like to pay less but if it means il get a better bike im not afraid to splash the cash, it must be that sort of style bike like above as i love the looks of them Razz

also if i were to buy an offroad one could i put it on road at all?! is it easy?

many thanks

If you're doing miles including anything over a 50 limit, I would look at a 2 stroke.

Rebuilds every 10,000 miles aren't excatly that much hassle and you're going to have to do the valve clearances on a 4 stroke more often than that probably.

So, personally I would reccomend something like DT125, KMX125 or CRM125. I have a CRM 125 and it's a good road bike - it will hit 80mph, but as stock is geared for about 100, so the engine still feels quite relaxed at dual-carriageway speeds.

For 4 strokes, there's the DR125, XR125 and XT125; all of which will probably manage to hit 60-65 flat out.

I appreciate you like the looks, but if you're doing a lot of miles you may sacrifice comfort for those looks.

As far as an off road bike on road, if it was originally a road bike that was say stolen and recovered, you can do it, but expect a load of hassle. If it's a dedicated off road bike, then it's probably going to be a very highly turned competition 2stroke and wouldn't be suitable for long journeys - we're talking more power than a lot of 250cc bikes from a 125. Would however be fairly easy to get it on road.

If you've had a gilera 172, why are you limiting yourself to a 125cc trail bike?

Oh and I forgot to mention the MZ125 SM. These come with road wheels/tyres, but are supposed to have quite good engines for a 4 stroke.

Just a thought, but I assume you took your 'bike test on a geared 'bike? If you didn't then you're restricted to automatic 'bikes i.e. scooters.

Took my mates 125 Gilera Runner for a spin around the block the other day, got to the end of the road and had to stop for traffic. Pulled the clutch in and slid nicely sideways to a halt.
Very Happy
Did it a few more times after that, all 'just by accident'.
Thumbs Up

Try www.adtrader.co.uk and www.loot.com as well as local free ads etc.

Don't expect your perfect bargain bike to be there the first time you look - ideally, get the papers the day they come out and call people as soon as possible for any possible good deals.

Don't know of anything specific - but all the usuals, ie bearings, bushing, seals, odd noises, etc etc.

I'd guess rings every 10k miles and piston every 20k or 30k maybe - however it's not like it's expensive or hard to do it yourself.

Make sure you keep it running with good 2 stroke oil and make sure you don't rag it from cold.

CBT you mean? You can ride a geared if you took your CBT on a 'ped. I did mine on a ped.

No, I mean the full driving test. I don't know how CBTs work in that respect - it's 11 years since I did mine...
