Okay, so I might be buying one in the next 2-3 days but I am curious as to why some models have speedos that go up to 180KMh and others 240KMH. Surely that doesnt mean some ZXR400's go 60KMH faster does it? Or is it something to do with restriction?

Any help would be great thanks.

A good zxr400 (on average) does ~130mph +/- 5mph or ~240kmh Smile

Okay but that would be quite annoying to have a speedo that goes to 180KMH when the bike does more Crying or Very sad.

haha really? I didn't know the zxr400 speedos stop there, anyway, where exactly will you be doing ver 110 mph anyway? Private land Rolling Eyes Laughing
Meh, theyre fast enough anyway, last i heard when i was asking about them, was 0-60 in 4 seconds, so cant be too bad with a 60bhp 400cc screamer of a bike, can't be dissapointed over 30mph misinformation on top speed - either way its over 110 and thats friggin fast for roads. Wink

UK bikes speedo will go up to 160mph/260kph, whereas the import clocks will go up to 180kph (usually with a mph sticker overlay by now)

Imports are usually restricted to 112mph (180kph i believe), where the UK spec will top out from 135-145mph depending on condition/spec/wind.

Thanks for the help.

Anything to look out for when buying a ZXR400? I have found one with only 18k miles, good condition and 12 months MOT with 3 months warrenty.

Look for lockwiring - i.e. drilled bolts are a sure evidence this has been done - it's a sign that it's been raced.

Check fork seals, they tend to go at about 20k or roundabout that region.

Check for the typical top end rattle that increases with revs and vice versa. It's an indication that the camchain tensioner needs replacing and it's commonplace on most quaks (my 250 did it and now my zx6r's making that noise).

The clutch is meant to sound rattly so don't be alarmed.

Other than that, just make sure that the bike rides well (go for a test ride) and nevermind if the paint isn't standard, the standard 90's scheme that kawasaki were dishing out was gash!

I dont think it has been raced. It looks very well looked after and has a nice custom paint scheme. If any shit starts happening then I will call the dealer up.

Thanks for the help.

Check tyre tread ware, chain and sprockets, gearbox (they have reputation for having problems) and any painted over fairing areas or parts that look coveredup after a crash- all which can prevent you forking out more than the bike's value keeping up together! Smile

Take a good look at the radiator and oil cooler, the mounts between the 2 can rot and the oil cooler ends up dangling in the air, if the clutch rattles a little dont worry tis normal.
Check the rear seat opens and closes ok, if it hasnt been lined up properly when its been refitted they can become stuck and are an expensive pain in the arse to get off!
Take it out on a test ride and check the gearbox does not jump out of 2nd back into neutral under heavy acceleration, this is a common problem on them and if it happens is a VERY expensive fix as the whole engine needs stripping.
Ive had mine for nearly 4 years now and i love it!
