The transalp is a very good all rounder, it will run on any knackered road in the U.K and i hear it's good for off road too, so the rest of europe will be a breeze for it.
Fuel range is around 200 to a tank but 2 peeps with luggage will bring that down abit.
My alp is used for commuting, 25 miles a day for 90 minutes (city life ) and has by far the most comfortable ride i've had on a bike.
As far as being like the @, it is just as good, but if you get the 650, better.(i'm biased of course)
The alp comes with hand guards but they aren't wrap guards, you won't need them for touring anyway so the standard ones will be fine.
On to accessories, i would steer clear of touratech considering your budget and go with sw motech for the crash bars, and givi for the luggage.
There is a forum on the alps and other honda trail bikes here:https://www.xrv.org.uk/. should you have any more questions.
I don't have a tall screen on my alp but do a search in that forum and you will find a couple of threads about which one to get.
Where abouts in London are you?
If you want to check out my 650, maybe we could meet, and you can get a better idea of how sluggish these aren't
Hope that helps. |

Hi Duncanpage.
I toured around Western Europe for three months two up with luggage on my 1998 Transalp. I had no problems at all. I have also toured around Scotland and England on it. .
For me it was perfect as I was in no rush and wanted to see the sites. As it is a "sit up and beg" riding position it was very comfortable although the seat can be uncomfortable after a couple of hours in the saddle until you have been riding a week or so.
It is no slouch even two up with luggage. It out accelerates traffic and will happily cruise at 80 - 90 mph.
I chose hard luggage as you can leave this on the bike and walk away from the bike when you want to stop for any reason e.g. have a look around a beauty spot. I fitted Kappa luggage (panniers and top box) as like you I didnot want to spend too much on the bike and accessories and the Kappa stuff is cheaper than Givi . I found it to be very good- waterproof and strong. On the 1998 Transalp you fit a wingrack system to the bike which you attach the top box and panniers to.
Mine had crashbars fitted when I bought the bike so I cannot help you there as to which make to buy. They are very useful though as the Transalp can be quite top heavy when fully loaded and stop a lot of damage if you drop it.
People have different views on what make/type of screen to fit. I fitted a Powerbronze touring screen which I like.
The standard hand guards are fine.
There aren't many faults to look for when buying a Transalp. Make sure the wheel spokes and rims are in good nick as they tend to corrode on older bikes. Also check the brake calipers are not binding. The engines are very relaible and pretty much bomb proof. That's partly why I bought a Transalp to do my trip on. That was three years ago and I still have the bike now.
Definitely check out the Transalp owners site as mentioned by someone else as it has a lot of useful information on it.
Just ask me if you want any other info.
Good trip. Cheers. |
