I need to buy a satnav unit for use mostly in my car for work ( I carry a lot of tools to work) but I'm thinking while I'm at it I might as well buy one for occasional use on the bike as well. It's sometimes a pain trying to navigate back home avoiding motorways when I've been to a specific destination on a day out on the bike and want to get home by the most direct route. Pain stopping to look at maps, writing complicated directions down for in a map pocket etc.

My question is- has anybody had experience of using a Garmin Zumo satnav in their car? It's a bike specific unit which can be used in a car but I'm not sure just how good it is ina car. It's expensive so I don't want to buy one for my car and then find out its not much use in the car.

I know TOMTOM Rider is cheaper but I've read quite a few reports where people have had problems with it.

Thanks for any help.

From what i've heard if its not a Tom Tom, then don't bother with it.

But saying that they are a rip for bikes.

I have one in the car (used once, to find a church in central london(funeral))

However i'd love to know if anyone had made a bracket to put the Tom Tom 1 on to the bike. (I know its not waterproof, but I could take it off if it rains). Or perhaps some simple cover (AKA plastic food bag).

I have a Garmin Quest I which I use mainly on the bike.

It is waterproof, doesn't have to be hard wired as it has an internal battery. It is small and compact but the screen is still large enough to see detail even for an old git like me Laughing

The only failing I find with it is it doesn't accept full post codes in the search function, only the first 4 digits. This in itself I do not find too much of a problem as I work out most of my routes on the computer before transferring them to the SatNav although I would certainly make sure that any replacement had a full postcode function.

The plus side is that the Quest II is a fair bit cheaper than most other bike designed units.

I have the Quest II and that does have post code search. Use it more in the car than the bike at the moment and have no complaints about it.

Even downloaded the speed scamera database so it warns you if your going over the limit.

I've got the Navman F20, no blue tooth but it's a good piece of kit, has postcode search, just throw it in the map pocket on the tank bag and you're away...
