I, persoanlly, am still not a great fan of sports 400s. Not only the lowish toyque* but the fairily high insurance**. If the year Really isn't important then you shouldn't have a problem... there's plenty of allright 400's going for <£1500 which should leave you plenty for insurance etc and a bit left ofer for some new gear hopefully.
* But then I got bored of the power on my zx6 pretty quickly, so I'm probably not the best person to listen to
** I'm not sure what the quotes would be like, but a few things to consider: If you go for a cheaper bike, it some times becomes more worth while to just get TPO insurance and a big lock... a cheaper bike also means losing less when you sell. Bikes the Bandit400/Fazer400/CB400 all use only slightly detuned engines and not quite to spec chassis' but are a /lot/ lower insurance group usually. |

Have a serious look at the SV650(s)...the 400s are notoriously high up the insurance ladder, but do generally offer a good route into riding "bigger" bikes.
Whereas I do agree with G about the torque/power delivery compared with 600s, I have to say that he's (we) a fair bit older than you, and at 17, I'll say 60bhp and 20-30 ft-lbs of torque should be enough to keep you alive!
As I say, sports 400s are in group 12 insurance, whereas the SV650 (or unfaired 400s) tend to be around group 9/10.
Having said that, the SV is fairly new, which means that finding a decent one for well under £3k may be difficult ____________________ TiN

while you're at it a bandit6 should actually be less insurance that a sports 400.... but then I never seem to have any luck convincing people that they don't really want a sports 4 |

www.biketrader.co.uk is usually a good first stop (doesn't appear to have any)
www.adtrader.co.uk is usually good and has one
www.loot.com is also worth a look (hasn't got any)
The fazer being newish is still gonna be fairly expensive though. |
