Speed camera sitings?

I only ask as I believe the old guidelines have been scrapped with the changes in the camera partnerships, and I can't find any new info, so...

What is the New Policy(tm) on siting speed cameras these days? Site selection, visibility guidelines etc. I've put an FOI request in but don't expect any miracles.
I ask as, suspiciously, on a pleasantly flowing section of the A435 in Birmingham (Maypole to Beckett's Farm) signs and poling for speed-cameras have started sprouting along its length. What used to be a smooth commute is undoubtedly going to turn to crud as people see the camera (on a 70 limit, FFS!), and panic-brake, and I'm wondering if there's anything rational I can do about the bloody things.

Anyone any useful info, or suggestions. And no, detcord, burning tyres, and circular saws are out. I have neither the resources or the balls.

Most cameras are sited at the whim of the local authority.

Until a few years ago it was left to the Police to decide where cameras would be most beneficial, but under deregulation that means the local authority only have to consult the Police not take up their advice.

So for example, millions of pounds of tax payers money has been spent installing cameras in Reading (where I live) but only 4 are active at any one time, and I know of at least 6 cameras that have never had any film placed in them since they were installed.

Where I live there are at least 6 camera sites and only one camera for the whole area. You just dont know which one unless someone spots the camera being fitted and then the grapevine goes into full flow.

Unfortunately, the cameras don't need to be active anymore!
Your average idiot slams on their brakes regardless of what speed they're travelling at! Twisted Evil

If I remember rightly, cameras could only be placed on a road where there had been a set number of fatalities over a certain timescale.

The downside being, it doesn't specify that the camera must be near the scene of where most of the accidents happened.

The A303 in the South West, for example, is huge and has sufferrred many fatalities along it's length.
This allows the authorities to place cameras wherever the hell they want, anywhere on the A303!

I would hazzard a guess the one (mebbe two i cannae remember how many are there) at the top of northumbleand(sp?) avenue and the ones on the a4 stretch between junction 12 and the turning for ride in ( I might be mistaken, on that stretch there are deff lines painted on the road for them but i'm fairly sure there's cameras on that stretch too... )

Would hazzard a guess at some of the other roads that have cameras on but i can't remember there names...


hmm, T.C - are the specs cameras on the m4 between junction 10 and 11 actually active? i've seen tonnes of people speed on those stretchs (even cars, not jsut people without front plates) that go speeding past way above the limit and i can't believe they'll all be getting fines :S unless the cameras are only on during rush hours or something :S ?

There are no specs cameras! There are traffic management cameras operated by Highways, but no enforcement cameras!

You can guess all you like! Wink

Bear in mind that unfortunately Reading has the highest number of cameras anywhere in the UK and Berkshire has the highest number in any one county.

But only 4 are active at anyone time anywhere in the Berkshire area and the camera operator who works out of 3 mile cross will only tell crews onthe day he activates them and his area covers the whole of the southern traffic area which includes all the traffic bases at Taplow, 3 mile X and Newbury!

Where those signs are positioned is where they are carrying out an 85 percentile check which I explained a while ago.

Thames Valley only has fixed gatso cameras with a couple of Truvello cameras, the most notable one being in Princess Risborough.
