I wouldnt mind the royal family if they paid tax on all their plundered loot, and we didnt keep giving them money.

If they dont agree to those terms, Im sure we can find some other family who would.

I think its daft that people moan about people on the dole when the queen and her lot get loads more per person.

You're such a prole at times Colin - eg. when you're awake!

They all pay tax on their incomes, and don't dodge it much more than any other wealthy individual or organisation. The rights and wrongs of that are up for debate, but I didn't see you whinging much about the private equity companies paying peanuts on their vast profits, when that story hit the press last week.

The problem is that people are so happy to bitch and whine and accept the gospel of "it's their fault" that they will cling to their delusions in the face of whatever rational debate you try. I'm considered reasonably anarchic by most of my acquaintances and even I have no particular antipathy toward the British monarchy, lets face it, they've been figureheads for too many centuries to have any real impact on the constitution of the country. I agree with most of that, the exception being that I think the Queen still has an important constitutional role as a final 'back stop'; in that she has the power to dissolve Parliament and hold an election at any time.

Most constitutional experts agree that doing so would probably result in that power being removed from her prerogative - but the simple fact of its existence is a constant reminder to any tyrannical PM that even his/her power has its limits.

Once HM dies and Charles takes over, I think we'll see the Monarchy quietly wound down; he just doesn't inspire the same support or grudging respect as Our Liz.
