Hi fellow bikers,

I will cut straight to my problem, i did my full bike licence back in 1999 while i was in the army this was kinda made to do it rather than wanted to. at the time i had no intrest in purchasing a bike, only riding on army bikes if asked but over the past few years i have had a craving to buy a bike and get into some serious riding.

So as it happens my car packed up and thought right enough and bought a honda cbr 600f a few months ago and there is where i hit a big wall i have only just now realised dvla have not put my full a licence on, they telling me i never sent it in and since its well after 2 years since passing i have lost my entitlement, since talking to dvla about anything is a nightmare i am now stuck without a bike licence has anyone got any recomendations or advice for me over these questions.

1. do i need to do a cbt and theory test again?

2. can i go straight into a DAS test on my bike.

3. with me been driving on the roads with a full uk licence for 9 years and (hate to say and regreatably riding a bike illagaly for a few months but still confident with the bike) is it advisable to do the DAS in a day or 2?

if anyone could add anything i have missed on please do i am still a complete newb to bike riding.

Thanks for any replys recieved very grateful.

Their was a news report about DVLA messing up when you move house.

It went something like this.

When you move house, you have to send you driving licence to them.

They then send you out a new one with your new address.

But they messed up tons of people licences.

What they did was, if you had both car and bike licence, they accidentally missed off the bike part of the licence.

What’s even worse is theirs no proof that you ever passed your bike test, since the only proof is your licence. DVLA insisted you need to prove you passed your test, yet they are the only people with the records, which they have now lost.

Pain in the arse problem..its a bit late to say now,but always get a copy of your licence BEFORE you send it,that way youve got something to fall back on,if and when things go wrong....sorry you learnt the hard way!!

1, Get a gun from your local TA centre

2, Have a wander down to the nearest DVLA office

3, Wave it around a bit

4, Leave with your new fully restored licence

5, Practice your theory while doing jail time

i still have written down the pass certificate number and date but ass for licence i cant even remeber if they put it on from the start i was just not that bothered about the bike part of the licence at the time (knew it would bite me in the arse) but the last conversation i had with a friend was that because it was 2 years after i passed weather they lost/cocked up my licence there was nothing i could do.

but i am sure going to give DVLA a rollakin anyway to see how far i can push this hopefully the pass details i have will be enough to rectify there cock up.

Glad to hear theirs some independent proof of you passing your test (Army).

For us civilians, we passed our tests, then had to post off the test certificate with our driving licences to be updated, we then got our new updated licence.

The only paperwork I have been left with is my licence and my CBT certificate!

Hears one of the articles about the problem, it’s also been in all the major motorcycle magazines since the problem affects a massive amount of people (this was not a small incident only effecting a few people).

My instructors on the DAS recommended taking a photocopy of the Licence and sending it to a solicitor to keep hold of. They knew of instructors (with 20+ years of training experience) who sent their old paper licences in (and the really oldbooklet types as well) only for their licences to come back missing the A classification. Bear in mind that these guys were fully acredited instructors so they had supporting documentation etc., the DVLA still refused to admit that there had been a fukup until they got legal people involved.

I’m going to get my licence photocopied and leave a copy with friends / relatives.

That way if my house burns down and my licence with it, I will still have proof.

I will be advising everyone else I know with a bike licence to do the same.

I just remembered, before I started online insurance, I had to show my driving licence to the insurance broker or if it was mail order send them a photocopy.

I also wonder if the test centre has records, I can remember which test centre I went to and what date.

I suspect that theirs been so much publicity in the papers and officials involved, that this problem should not happen again?, but people already effected is another story?

So did you ever send the pass certificate in or did you just put it to one side and forget all about? If you sent it in and it is their mistake then you may stand a chance of getting it sorted, but if you never bothered having your licence updated once you had passed then you may have a fight on your hands.
