alright guys Very Happy first post, bit of a rambling story for you all ! i have read the stickies and they were very helpful, but i am hoping for a bit more advise ...

im looking to get my bike licence sorted, and the more i find out, the more confused i get! i understand the CBT and theory, practical tests etc. but i have no idea what bike to get, the bikes i like, are far too fast and expensive for me at the mo

im 19, so direct access isnt an option. so im going be on a 125 / 33bhp bike for a while. this is where the confusion sets in! Embarassed

i have thought about getting a cheap 125 to learn on and pass my test (and drop), but it seems that will be too slow within a few weeks of passing my test, so seems a bit pointless?

i have also considered getting a bigger bike, possibly 250 or 400 restricted for my 2 year probation, but i cant learn on it and i have been told its a grey area trying to prove its restricted and that my insurance is higher because i have 'modified' the engine!!! Shocked

i suppose i could learn on a cheapo 125 and then invest a little bit more in a bigger bike, so that i have something to enjoy, and hopefully learn a lot about bikes with, for my 2 years?

well played if you have managed to keep up with me up to now Clapping can anyone offer any advise ??? has anyone been in a similar situation recently ???

cheers in advance

You got the same prob I had.. This is what I done.

3 days trainning + test + hire bike (125 CG) = £375

I have a Suzuki bandit GSF v 400 which is also gray. To get it restricted I bought a kit off eBay and fit it myself then I took the bike to a local garage so they could check it was fitted correctly and then send off for the certificate. If you’re not capable to fit yourself, for around £150 you can take your bike to a garage they will order & fit the restrictors for you as well as giving you the certificate which proves the bike is restricted.

TBH you should be fine. You'll have the CBT first which will give you some training and the the instructor on the 3 day course will go through everything.

As far as I understand it lots of people over 21 Take the CBT and DAS with no experience before that and pass so you should be fine. I was son the road for a 1 year and 3 months before I took my test so I had some experience but learnt a lot of bad habits.

As for buying a bike bigger than a 125 it's fine as long as it is restricted. I'm on the 33BHP license and I have a Hornet 600 restricted and haven't had any problems. There shouldn't be a problem as long as you are restricted.

And you can buy a 125 if you want to learn on and when you pass your A2 you can sell it for roughly the same price so you wouldn't lose much money and the buy the bike you want when funds allow!

Good luck with everything Thumbs Up Mr. Green Thumbs Up

I passed my CBT and 7 months later my test too on a Cg125, but i hired that bike and i brought my cagiva mito, which is a restricted 125 to 15bhp but i could de restrict it now and have 33bhp to play with, but i chose to have a bigger bike so that i can take the restrictors out after the 2 years and have yet more power its up to you really. Don't let the 33bhp put you off its not always about what the bikes top speed is, its how good it is at cornering too Thumbs Up
